I'm pretty sure that Reagan has become a false idol.
There are some things to be learned from Reagan's handling of the Soviet Union (certainly, Obama could take a lesson or ten from the Reagan files). Reagan was less successful with the middle east and central America. There is no question that Reagan did the right things in dealing with the Soviets, and history will give him credit for that. Even though there were other factors in play that helped cause the collapse of the USSR, it does not diminish the fact that Reagan played his cards correctly. A lesser president (like Carter) may not have been so successful.
Which cards specifically?
The world was very afraid of Reagan. When he said there was a red line he MEANT it.
