    When did this originate?
Is this strictly a UF thing only?
Is this a student section thing? Or does the whole stadium do it?

I really despise it. That is all.

Its been around for several years now. I hate it too. Mostly student section...but it trickles through the crowd.

Perhaps I just wasn't paying attention, but I graduated in 2001 and don't recall it at all.

You know, I know the drum beat has been a around for at least 5 years or so. (Following a flag) But the "you suck" thing has to be new. Heard it at the Arkansas game for the first time. We sit on the West side, so we couldn't really understand what they were saying. Pretty lame, if you ask me. I like the beat though. The you suck part has to be new, as the entire stadium isn't saying it together. Either that, or enough fans don't know about it. Or, maybe fans don't like it. We have to have a band member here on GC. Or someone in the know...

Someone should pass out pamphlets showing how heavily penalized we are & why it's a stupid chant.

First time I heard it was last year's LSU game.

That was my first game as a student FWIW.

When I was there 06-10 it was usually "move em back, move em back, move em wayyyyy back". Or at least thats what I thought it was.

They've been doing it for at least a couple of years now, not sure exactly how long, not crazy about the "you suck" part, but this is the part that kills me...

I'm sure you can window dress it to say it is actually something else, but it's pretty clear what it looks like, not sure how a GATOR fan can participate in that sort of thing.

    Go GATORS!

Its supposed to simulate throwing a flag, hence why most people doing it will take off their hat when they do it. You see players doing it when they believe a penalty should be called. Signaling a first down looks more like a semi chop.

Sure it is, but let's look at the similarities...

    Semi chop checklist:

    - bending arm at the elbow with little to no shoulder motion
    - repeating motion

Like I said, everything else is just window dressing, it is what it is. I don't get what the hat has to do with it since a ref throwing a hat is for marking a spot not calling a penalty, but that hat part is rather harmless...if anything it's a distraction from the fact that our fans are doing the chop.

When players simulate it, it looks more like reaching for their waste and their arm going up in a completely different motion (more like how refs actually throw their flags given where they keep them).

    Go GATORS!

It doesn't really look anything like the chop.

Bend elbow so hand is near your ear, throw hand forward, repeat.

It's meant to be done with a flag or hat in hand, so very unlike the chop in meaning

Over the head at an upward angle with a flick of the wrist. Again, nothing like the Chop.

They're similar enough. Besides, we're one of the most penalized teams ever. The last thing we should be doing is telling a team they suck if they're penalized
