I know this may sound absurd, but it just seems like Mac was a bad dream from a long time ago. It has been so easy to forget him. Anybody else?

I am terrifically excited about Darth Dan as our new coach.

Let the Big Gator Eat, again.

Complete disaster. I’m embarrassed that I had him in my top 5 around the time we hired him. Honestly I don’t want anyone from the Saban coaching tree anywhere near this team ever again.

There is no Saban tree just about. Saban is more of a concrete telephone pole. He's just out there by himself.

Are you new to the board? The Zooker still gets brought up here on a regular basis. If this is the last thread ever about Mac, I'll eat Les Miles's hat.

Um, if you are going to reference Miles and eating, you need to say "eat all of the grass at Florida Field."

I have to confess that I originally thought that Jeremy Foley hit a home run with Mac. On paper Mac seemed liked a great hire. He took Colorado State from 3-9, the year before he took over their program to a 10-3 record, doing so with a very productive offense and a quarterback who was a third round NFL draft pick. As it turned out his offenses at Florida were as offensive as the offenses under Will Muschamp. He demonstrated that he and his trusty sidekick Doug Nussmeier were incapable of developing quarterbacks and he managed to alienate Will Grier the one quarterback who could have made a difference. Jim McElwain may again be a successful coach at another Group of Five mid-major. During his tenure in Gainesville he demonstrated that he didn't have what it takes to coach a program in a major conference.

I liked Mac OK and supported him, but he didn't understand Florida football. He had legitimate beefs, to be sure, but Gator Nation whined about Zook's and Meyer's substandard offenses that were ranked in the top 25. Having triple digit offenses are unfathomable, and the pressure ground him down to the point he was desperate to leave.

I wish him well. He didn't seek out to sabotage the program...

I agree with you to a point but his unwillingness and hardheadedness to make changes doomed him. I was hoping he would stay as Head coach and just change OC, Special Teams coach and Strength & Conditioning coach. But I am so happy to have Mullen that now I am glad McElwain could not see or fix the problems.

    Mac's downfall were these things:

    - Too laid back. Never took the job seriously.
    - Zero player development at any offensive position, not just QB
    - Zero ability to make any in-game adjustments, even at halftime
    - Zero accountability; he never once blamed himself or his staff; threw his players under the bus
    - Never made any staff changes when it was apparent changes were needed
    - Horrible attitude at press conferences

I never liked the hire. I thought it was way out there and I thought he was picked because of his past accomplishments. The red flag is why Saban pushed him and Nuss out - they were too conservative for even Saban.

    Good luck Mac.

(Don't feel the need to pile on, other than to invoke his name from time to time for context--as in 'McElChump', since it seemed like a seamless stretch of suck from Muschamp through McElwein).

A new day has dawned and a new era begun, in the Swamp!

For some reason I really believe that the whole Kelvin Taylor incident fundamentally changed the man......he was completely different after that.

before that he was confident and somewhat brash. After that incident he seemed silly, whimsical, and unfocused. Like he was trying not to offend anyone.

if that was indeed the case, then he was too thin skinned for this kind of job.

Extremely proud to have Dan Mullen as our head coach. I cringed every time Mac spoke. Dan will represent the school well.
