There were a lot of folks on the Duke board a couple of years ago who kept insisting that their coach never asked Rivers to decommit, that their coach is above that and it all came from Doc Rivers who kept contacting Duke.. Well Beal comes pretty close to saying their coach asked him to decommit. http://washington.cbslocal.com/2013...t-was-turning-down-coach-ks-recruiting-pitch/ . Not against any rules just no "gentleman"s agreement.

K is the new Wooden. Slimy as all get out, but saintly to the press. Duke is slimy, but not quite as slimy as UCLA was way back then.

This. I'd be disappointed if Coach Donovan weren't checking in with "committed" players periodically. The only issue I have is with the hypocrisy of claiming you / your coach doesn't do it.

Exactly, it is like claiming your school does not negatively recruit. Every school does if only implicitly by saying their school is excellent for such and such a reason. That they would not invite Rivers on an official visit until he announced he was not longer committed to UF does not mean they did not recruit him prior to decommitting.

Duke's mistake was going after Rivers at all. Our mistake was going after Rivers instead of Shane Larkin.

Certainly one reason not to take really really early commits is that a humble 9th grader might show up at UF or in this case Duke thankfully as an 18 year old ego maniac.

Teddy Dupay and Mike Frazier are a couple of really early commits that come to mind. They weren't egomaniacs.

I did not say that every such commit would be such a problem. I just suggested it was one more danger in such moves. According to an article I saw, Calathes also committed as early as Dupay and Miller. Frazier while an early commit had finished 10th grade before committing.

Is there a difference between talking to a committed player and asking a committed player to decommit? Asking the player to decommit seems to be the sin involved here.

Is the gentleman's agreement that you cannot talk to a committed player?

Yes, the Duke fans claim their staff would NEVER contact a player committed to another program. So Rivers must have contacted Duke first.

I don't know what the gentlemans agreement is, but I can't say there's an excuse in the world for a coach to pursue a committed player. I completely understand why this wouldn't be acceptable.

But what should a coach do if a committed player contacts them? Could you blame him for saying he wouldn't talk to the player unless he decommitted? I'm not suggesting this is what happened with Rivers though. The only alternative would be telling the player they are dead to them because of a previous commitment.
