Happy to oblige and appreciate your inquiring mind. From the National Snow & Ice Data Center:

Arctic sea ice extent for April 2014 averaged 14.14 million square kilometers (5.46 million square miles). This is 610,000 square kilometers (236,000 square miles) below the 1981 to 2010 average extent, and 270,000 square kilometers (104,000 square miles) above the record April monthly low, which occurred in 2007. While the rate of ice loss was rapid through the first half of April, it subsequently slowed down. The rate of ice loss averaged for the month was 30,300 square kilometers per day (11,700 square miles per day), which is slower than the average rate of 38,400 square kilometers per day (14,800 square miles per day) over the period 1981 to 2010. As of May 4, 2014, extent was below average in the Barents Sea, Sea of Okhotsk, and the Bering Sea, and slightly above average in Baffin Bay.

In the Southern Hemisphere, autumn is well underway, and sea ice extent is growing rapidly. Antarctic sea ice extent for April 2014 reached 9.00 million square kilometers (3.47 million square miles), the largest ice extent on record by a significant margin. This exceeds the past record for the satellite era by about 320,000 square kilometers (124,000 square miles), which was set in April 2008.
Following near-record levels in March, a slightly higher-than-average rate of increase led to a record April ice extent, compared to the satellite record since 1978. During April, ice extent increased by an average of 112,600 square kilometers (43,500 square miles) per day. Ice extent on April 30 was a record for that day; record levels continue to be set in early May.

You combine the two to see that global sea ice is near record extent. It is also worth noting that Arctic sea ice was near record lows during the 2013 winter, but rebounded this year by nearly 30%.

Doesn't support the narrative to report that Antarctic sea ice has been steadily growing for years.

Much of the misleading news that is reported by a supportive popular media is either the model predictions which have been woefully inaccurate, or repeating statements from policymakers that are often outright lies. There is now a long long list of failed predictions from the climatologists, one of the most noteworthy from Hansen himself (NASA/GISS director) who claimed that Manhattan would be flooding from sea level rise by now. In the president's new assessment, there are three outright lies about trends in the introductory summary.

One other tidbit, new worldwide record lows were recently discovered in Antarctica:

Scientists recently recorded the lowest temperatures on Earth at a desolate and remote ice plateau in East Antarctica, trumping a record set in 1983 and uncovering a new puzzle about the ice-covered continent.

Ted Scambos, lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), and his team found temperatures from −92 to −94 degrees Celsius (−134 to −137 degrees Fahrenheit) in a 1,000-kilometer long swath on the highest section of the East Antarctic ice divide.

The record temperatures are several degrees colder than the previous record of −89.2 degrees Celsius (−128.6 degrees Fahrenheit) measured on July 21, 1983 at the Vostok Research Station in East Antarctica.

Here's another graph from your nutty climate change denial website.

This very clearly shows a downward trend. The nut who runs the denial website complains about the government cherry picking the data because they don't throw out the 2 outliers. The irony. Cherry picking the data would be throwing out the data points you don't like. The denial nut is the cherry picker here. There is very clearly a downward trend. It also shows the variability from one year to the next appears to be much greater over the last 10 years than it was before. This would be consistent with the scientific consensus on climate change as well. There is greater variability in weather, but the overall general trend is that the planet is getting warmer.

Yep, those ultra low, anomalous reading look to be more likely phony then accurate or real.

Does this graph represent just the Arctic or is it global? Could you link the page?

But of course. The data you cons don't like is always faked, Bill. That way you can live in the world you want to live in without the worry that some of your notions might be wrong.

I didn't pick the graph. It was on the same climate change denial website that Wygator is apparently a big fan of.

You CWs would have no idea either way, since you simply ignore anything that doesn't fit what you want to believe in.

Thanks. That graph is just Arctic ice, not global. I addressed that Arctic ice has been declining for years, at the same time that the Antarctic has been growing dramatically. I also pointed out that 2013 was quite low in the Arctic, but that it rebounded significantly in 2014. So I'm not sure what the surprise is here. Since the overall theme is global warming, it makes sense to look at global ice cover rather than simply what is happening near the north pole.

Also important to note that if the Arctic melts, that is mostly floating ice so sea level isn't affected. The concern for sea level would be if Antarctic continental ice were melting...fortunately, it isn't!

This is an Arctic ice graph, not global. Please see my reply #38. Also, no need to call Steve Goddard a nut. He always posts his sources and datapoints (usually from various govt research units), so you can check his information. Please note that the first two paragraphs I posted earlier were not from Goddard, but directly from the National Snow and Ice Data Center.
