The Last 3 Triple Crown Winners.

    1978. Affirmed.

    1977. Seattle Slew.

    1973. Secretariat.

Will we finally have another Triple Crown Winner with California Chrome?

With California Chrome aiming to be the first Thoroughbred Triple Crown winner in 36 years, it brings me back to 1973, where to this day, I saw the greatest athletic feat ever.

Secretariat's Belmont was an amazing race. Much was being written before the race questioning whether Secretariat had the bloodlines to go the mile and a half. The track surface on the day of his race was very fast, they must have scraped it. I remember Desert Vixen, a 3 year old filly, broke the track record for a mile and an eight a couple of races before the Belmont on that day. IMO, the 1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup, where Seattle Slew lost by a nose to Exceller, was the greatest race I ever saw, and even though Seattle Slew lost, I believe his performance that day has to rank among the best ever by a thoroughbred race horse.

if you watch the Kentucky Derby that year, the horse that finished 4th was Forego, a gelding that turned out to be one of the best distance horses of all time. I wonder what would have happened if they had brought Forego back for the Belmont

Wow, what a long, amazing racing career Forego had! He usually carried 20-30 pounds more weight than his competition and ran so much further with his late charges from the outside. And he did it all as a gelding.

The added distance of the Belmont makes it a crapshoot. Many 3 year olds have never raced that distance before, so it's a complete unknown in terms of race strategy and endurance. With 11 horses, this was a surprisingly large field for a Belmont, too.

I was 17 years old when Affirmed won the Triple crown. After 3 of them in 6 years, I thought it would happen many more times in my lifetime. Many of us may never see one again.

Thoroughly whipped him since he set the 1.5 mile record that still stands today?

Secratariat might have actually run even faster had there been another horse that could actually push him. He toyed with the field in every race. At the Derby, he went from last to first running every 1/4 faster than the last. At the Preakness he went first to last again, but this time with a move that only took about 1/8 of a mile. And then he simply started and finished fast at the Belmont breaking poor Sham whose owner told the jockey to keep up with Secratariat no matter what.

It's funny that horse breeding basically takes the same horses over and over and tries to get race horses. If they branched out, they could get better ones I imagine. Otherwise, they've hit their peak.

I still get tears in my eyes when I think about Secretariat. He was not of this earth. If he were considered an athlete he'd be the greatest of all time.
