"The sun shines bright in my old Kentucky home
Tis Summer, the young folks are gay.
The corn top's ripe and the meadow's in bloom
While the birds make music all the day.
The young folks roll on the little cabin floor
All merry, all happy and bright.
By 'n by hard times come a-knocking at the door
Then my old Kentucky home good night.

    Weep no more, my Lady,
    Oh, weep no more, today.
We will sing one song for the old Kentucky home
For the old Kentucky home far away."

Missing my second one in a row after 12 straight. I've never been to a more fun event. You have to be a real jackass to screw it up. And if you are, I probably bet $500 on you to win.

FTR, I hit the first two winners I ever bet on (War Emblem and Funny Cide.) Thought I had it figured it out. But you'll notice that the last one was 2003. Luckily War Emblem at 20-1 win me enough to keep me in the black for quite a while.

Look for a mid-odds horse. The huge field routinely erases the gap between the top few horses. Plus, why bother with a 4-1 unless you're playing exotics (which I do.) Could be sloppy too. For straight bragging rights, strictly win betting, I like Charming Kitten. Prado riding and Pletcher training and has yet to not contend and is far enough outside to avoid early banging. Mylute too, but less accomplished team and stuck inside. Revolutionary for a safer-but-not-chalk pick.

Thanks for posting your experiences at "The Derby". It was very interesting reading them. I have never been to one. Maybe someday.

From Thursday's Tampa Tribune about the weather at Churchill Downs on Derby Day:

    Looks Wet

The forecast for Derby Day continues to call for rain. It looks like a 50 per cent chance of showers in the Louisville area, with a high of 64 degrees. The last time it rained on race day was 2010, when 1.32 inches fell.

    ****

Well, it'll be a wet track but hopefully the sun will come out before and during race time. :)

I don't recall the year but I was there for an absolute monsoon. Standing water past your ankles, up to your knees in lower ground (like the big bathrooms in the infield.) Stood in water for 20 minutes to cash my winners out at the end.

That's the one time I wished we'd done the grandstands. Otherwise the infield is the bomb.

BTW, if you ever see the infield you'll see tat everyone brings caution tape and "ropes off" their territory so drunks don't stomp through your canopy or blanket all day. I started that. A local TV station interviewed me about it. And I was stupid hammered. It was glorious!

    Good for you! :)

I bet a lot of fans mark their infield area now. By the way, I guess they sell all kinds of "beverages" at Churchill Downs on Derby Day.

We have a 90% chance 100 miles south in southern KY, don't imagine Louisville will be much different with the front coming through, it'll be a slow track for sure. 2010 was the last one I went to and it was a miserable day. I was looking forward to getting back this year and my wife finally getting to experience the Derby till the forecast came out and it was initially projected to be in the 50's and raining. Going to enjoy our juleps from the couch this weekend instead.

The Derby is a must do. The only problem is if you experience one, you'll want to experience them all.

Honestly the best I've found is Early Times mint julep mix. It's got the mint flavoring in the bourbon already and you just pour it over ice. That's what they actually use at the Derby. I don't know if you can buy it everywhere or not, but in KY it arrives in every liquor store about a month before Derby. Early Times is one of my favorite bourbons to begin with so maybe that's why I like that julep so much.

He said his knee is doing better and he placed a little bet on Palace Malice.

Good news is the rain has stopped for awhile now. Bad news is the track is a muddy mess. Jockeys and horses in the back of the pack aren't to have too much fun with all that mud being thrown at them!
