    from the article:

The bill mirrors restrictions passed in Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Alabama, Kansas, Wisconsin and Arizona. In North Carolina, lawmakers are considering a measure that would allow state health officials to apply standards for ambulatory surgical centers to abortion clinics.
Hegar acknowledged working with anti-abortion groups to draft the legislation. A lawsuit originating in Texas would also likely win a sympathetic hearing at the conservative 5th Circuit Court of Appeals on its way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

    another article

This is part of a national effort in which Republicans, armed with polls that show broad and broadening support (now at about 60 percent) for restrictions on elective abortions after the fifth month of pregnancy, are looking to change the debate on the subject. Rather than a total prohibition sought by the pro-life movement in the decades after the Roe v. Wade decision, Republicans are looking to meet voters where they are and enact limits.
The Gosnell case in Philadelphia is no small part of this, as the horror show there covered not only unsafe and unsanitary conditions in a largely unregulated environment, but also the killing of viable babies in late-term procedures.

The NON aborted liberals will go nuts over this. They better be happy that their own mother's didn't believe in abortion.

80% of TX voters oppose this law.

Just one more step towards turning Texas blue.

Actually, a large majority support the law and have for decades. It's only holding abortion mills to the same standards of other clinics who actually do real surgical procedures. To say this bill is strict is pretty laughable considering Planned Parenthood performs nearly as many abortions as Japan, one of the largest abortion providers out there.

Abortion "mills" only exist because the pro-life movement has succeeded in pressuring hospitals to stop performing abortions.....this has nothing to do with standards....it's about controlling a women's healthcare.

In true Texas fashion, the ban is probably after 18 weeks at night.

Believing in the right to an abortion and actually exercising the right to have one are 2 different things. Not all women who do would exercise the right unless their health was at risk or the baby would not be able to live a meaningful life, my wife being one of them

I have no problem at all with reasonable restrictions, I think the problem in Texas is that it will restrict access so dramatically so as to act as a ban. I think very few Texans, or people anywhere in America for that matter, are advocating for unlimited abortion rights. But your thinking so allows you to make your broad, quippy, partisan posts.

Medicare has made it nearly impossible for people who treat my cancer to operate in a professional manner. The media never says "boo" about that though. There is one doctor at best in NJ who is even close to appropriate for my treatment.

What a load of hooey. These laws, undoubtedly written by ALEC, being passed around the country are about one thing only: shutting down safe, legal clinics to get around Roe v. Wade.

Sooner or later, we're going to see a headline like this from one of the states intent on saving the lives of the unborn.

It is about sanctuary denial to wanton and amoral slaughter, perhaps. Just because it is legal doesn't mean it even the slightest bit morally defensible in any circumstance other than mutually life threatening emergency.
