Remember when you could go back out to the parking lot at half time, tailgate some more, then get back in the game? Not so much fun anymore. With HDTV, sports bars, no five, six hour drive, cops looking for a bust, I miss the tailgaiting, but not that much.

I got issued a citation for riding my bicycle in the wrong lane in front of Criser on the way to class one day. Still cant believe I wasn't even given a warning.

I love UF and the game atmosphere at the Swamp, but our tailgating is very lackluster.

Places I've been where tailgating is head and shoulders better than ours:

Clemson, Auburn, Notre Dame, USC, Oregon, LSU, Washington, UCLA

How many of those commenting on the sad state of Gator tailgating actually tailgate?

When firmly entrenched in tailgating, I'm not really aware of what's happening around the rest of campus, too much happening at our tailgate to notice.

IOW, better tailgating will happen when everyone else gets off their asses and starts tailgating hard.

I took a non-Gator friend to a recent game. He had a great time, but was shocked at the tailgating experience. At UF, you can't stroll from tailgate to tailgate meeting new people, drinking their beer, eating brats, etc. This is very common at other schools. You meet tons of new people and have a good time. At UF, it seems like everyone is focused on their own little party without much regard to mingling (an overgeneralization I know but somewhat accurate).

Which law is it that causes the cops to be so strict about carrying beers? Is it a local law, county, or state. I think if we are serious about it, we can have the law changed by next year.

It's probably city law, actually. There are plenty of places in Florida where you can walk around in public with a beer in your hand.

Actually, reading more about this, it seems more a courtesy than legal in the places where you can do it.

Gainesville would certainly be able to ease up if they wanted to, though.

Unless there is a fringe lunatic local population, a city law is the easiest to change. A positive tailgating experience would benefit the city so much that it would be a no-brainer.

Not really. There is really no equivalent to the cuisine at the LSU tailgate. Best in the nation, IMO.

    ^^^^ This!

I have tailgated at several different SEC and other conference schools. The while idea for our group of friends is to have a good time, meet some new friends, and relish the game day experience. We set up a pop up and Grill, drink, play corn hole, and socialize with Gators and opposing fans.

I haven't been to a home game in a long time, but it sounds like they are taking things a bit too far. As long as folks are not causing anyone else problems, they should let the adults enjoy themselves. They are the ones that fund the program, they should be embraced not hassled!

Never had a problem tailgating in Gainesville or an open container issue. Old game cups work best.. well and not acting like a belligerent asshole. We used to put out a full spread in the sink hole behind rietz and a few times upd would stop by knowing they'd be fed. My folks tailgated by the o-dome and we'd walk back and forth..never had an issue.
