Haha...another case of premature chompulation? Hope not.
If polls were about how teams are playing now Cuse would not have been number one for a week or two now. Zona would be out of the top 5. Sure how they are playing is a part of it but its more based on resume. Zona won't fall that much because of what they have accomplished this far(non conference was impressive), Cuse won't drop too far either based on the whole season.
Winning streaks like that can help create an mystique about a venue, kind of like what the Swamp had in the 90s (I think it's diminished a bit, mainly due to changes in policy and student body/section. But I digress). But obviously the host team playing in that venue is the real difference.
We don't need to be #1.
Let someone else carry that baggage.
This team doesn't need "wake up" calls. Auburn was a tough matchup for us, they played us well in Auburn, and last night came as no surprise, especially without Hill. They also shot at an uncharacteristically high clip, which is what put them in position to win. We aren't going to miraculously turn into a great three point shooting team overnight. Nor is it like we were not trying in the first half last night. You can't attribute everything to being "unfocused." Their guards were creating open looks for their shooters, who were knocking them down at a very high rate. That is going to happen from time to time,
Believe me, playing Ole Miss in the Tad will be as tough as this game. Summers has been playing very well, Henderson is Henderson, and that building is a very noisy, chaotic environment with few Gator fans present.
For those that forgot, Henderson is still playing for Ole Miss. Did I say I really hate him?
I think some are underestimating just how bad of a loss that was to BC. Substantially worse than, say a loss to Auburn would've been --- BC was barely top 200 in the RPI, with their only other wins on the SEASON being Sacred Heart, FAU, VaTechx2, and Washington. Washington is the only one of those teams that's even remotely mediocre.
Syracuse's resume had some flaws to begin with - their schedule has been nothing special at all, and thus they're now low-end of the top 10 in both rpi and pomeroy. Obviously they've been hanging by a thread, with most pollsters unlikely to really punish them until they lost. Yeah if they somehow beat Duke that'd counter some of the impact, but I think they'd still drop, assuming UF beats Ole Miss. The BC loss is just that bad. Of course given how they're playing right now, the more likely scenario is probably that it doesn't matter because Duke beats them anyways.
I don't want to be number 1. Bigger target.....
I think this team is a good one, but not the best in the country right now. We find ways to win with experience and defense, but I think Florida is one of several that can win it all. What scares me about this team is they have let teams hang around.
I actually think that the best team in the country going into the tournament is not Florida, not Syracuse, not Duke, not Arizona, not Wichita State.
I think the team that could win it all and nobody should sleep on is:
Louisville.......they could end up as a 5 seed in a bracket with Duke and Arizona along with SD State and they are much better than all those teams....
Saw this over on ESPN and thought it was telling about the feat BC pulled off last night...
This is the 3rd time EVER that a team below .500 has defeated the AP No. 1 team on the road. It's the first time since Georgia Tech won at top-ranked Kentucky in 1955."...
"the Orange, in a span of a few of hours, went from being one of the two remaining undefeated teams in Division I men's basketball to being the only team ranked in the top 20 of the AP poll with a loss to a school currently rated lower than 150 in the RPI.
Translation: This was a really, really, really bad loss." Gary Parrish CBS Sportsline
We already picked up one first place vote when Cuse was still undefeated. If both win Saturday, I would bet at the very least we have half of the first place votes. That was a terrible loss, kind of hard to ignore even with a win at Duke.
Seriously glad you brought this up. I've just been biting my tongue with some of the posts being made about the game. It's not always about how your (our) team is playing it also has a lot to do with the level of play from the opponent.
First of all, yes ultimately and absurdly premature.
Secondly, the Gators very nearly lost yesterday in almost exactly the same situation, when playing a 186 RPI team at home.
It seems relatively clear that both the Gators and the Orange severely underestimated their Wed oponent. The Gators were fortunate enough to escape with a win, the Orange, and the have played a lot of close games this year also, for once, didn't. And yes, if they beat Duke, they will be and should be ranked ahead of the Gators. No one in their right mind would claim that the SEC is of the same quality as this year's ACC. Last year's ACC, yes, it was very weak, but this year, with the addition of Syracuse and Pitt, it is a reasonably tough conference.
Yeah but we all know Duke is going to DESTROY Cuse.....(evil laugh...)
That may be true, but no one in their right mind would claim 'Cuse has played as difficult of an OVERALL schedule as UF, either. Their non-con schedule was very soft, which is exactly why they are now several spots below UF in the RPI calculation. I expect a lot of voters would keep it very, very simple...if UF goes 2-0 this week and 'Cuse goes 1-1...they swap positions. If the weekend games actually do go that way (which I would not bet on), it'll be very interesting to see how it shakes out.
Right, wrong or indifferent the prevailing trend in polls this day and age is that IF you lose, you drop. How far depends on the circumstances and teams but that is the way it is these days. Personally I don't really care if we are #1 or #2 as long as we win on Saturday.
I might have been a little early on the call but you can book it. GATORS WILL BE NEW #1. This softens the pain of the football season a bit.
What's this "football' you speak of? Is that where they kick that kick that little round ball into nets?
Now it will be official.
Yep.. Numero Uno!!
