Suspected Islamist militants stormed a college in northeastern Nigeria and shot dead around 40 male students, some of them while they slept early on Sunday, witnesses said.

The gunmen, thought to be members of rebel sect Boko Haram, attacked one hostel, took some students outside before killing them and shot others trying to flee, people at the scene told Reuters.

"They started gathering students into groups outside, then they opened fire and killed one group and then moved onto the next group and killed them. It was so terrible," said one surviving student Idris, who would only give his first name.

The Westboro Baptists are far worse and so are all Christians.

Come on! Everyone know that a good 95% of Muslims are good, honest, peaceful people that would never do anything violent in the name of their religion!

I guess this is the thread to completely fail to grasp and thus mischaracterize very simple points?

I think their point (to an extreme) is the argument constantly put forth about Westboro representing Christianity the exact same way as Islamic fundamentalists/Muslims who do violent acts. Their point is that whenever someone points out how the so-called "Religion of Peace" just seems bent on committing such acts as above, someone will bring up Westboro's protests as they are somehow on the same level. Or will bring up the Crusades, which happened a thousand years ago, as somehow validating the point that Christianity is somehow "just as bad" or "worse than" Islam.

Exactly! That group of idiots, the Westboro nuts, never kill people like the Islamic fundamentalists do in the name of their religion of hate.

Right. The point is that the extreme factions of a religion do not represent the religion as a whole. It seems a basic point, but one that seems to evade some people here.

And I think this argument is flawed, at least for these purposes, but shows that no religion is - in itself - bad, but bad acts can be done in the name of any religion.

You're missing the larger, more relevant point: Westboro does not represent or define Christianity.

This shouldn't be that hard to grasp.

Nice try, but we all know the difference between the two religions and their few nut cases. One kills innocent people in the name of Allah and the other doesn't.

This can be explained very simply if you answer these two questions:

    1. Is Westboro emblematic of Christianity?

    2. Is Christianity the "religion of celebrating the deaths of American soldiers?"

If you answer "no" to both of those, then you understand (or should) why ascribing the acts of extremists sects to the whole is a logical failure.

Yeah I don't think anyone is trying to make the point that Westboro is just as bad as terrorists.

The actual point is: the fact that there are nuts doing awful things in the name of a religion doesn't mean that the entirety of the religion itself is evil.

Westboro not smearing the entirety of Christianity is an example of that idea, using a religion that most Americans are far more familiar with than Islam. I don't think all of Christianity is an evil, spiteful plague on the world because of Westboro, nor do I think that all of Islam is because of terrorists.

I thought this point was pretty dang clear (albeit much harder to attack than the "liberals think Westboro is just as evil as terrorism!" strawman that has evidently been thrown up).

I know, but the liberals accuse them of representing the Christian mindset. The Christians do something that the moderate Muslims never do, we make a verbal stand against them and their despicable tactics plus they denounce their existence as an occult like gathering and not Christian based, yet the moderate Muslims remain mostly silent about the radical Muslims in Islamic countries and never separate their view of Islam from the radicals.

Then they are just as guilty of stupidity as people who ascribe the acts of extreme Muslims to the religion as a whole.
