Wallethub, one of those sites that always producing rankings of all kinds things, looks at states most and least dependent on federal funding. It uses 3 criteria: return on taxes paid to federal govt, federal funding as percent of state revenue and number of federal employees per capita.

The results are in line with other rankings. Blue states average ranking 33.3. Blue states 19.1

I find it interesting how few federal dollars go into DC. Obviously, huge numbers of federal employees. But the lowest direct payments of any section of the US and lowest federal insurance.

Interesting that the 5 least dependent state and 9 of the 10 least dependent states are all blue states. And they aren't small racially homogeneous ones either as many on the right like to claim when this is brought up on here. Illinois, New Jersey, California, Nevada, Colorado all have significant minority communities. In fact, they have higher minority populations than a couple of the 10 most dependent states (who also happen to be red states) of Montana and South Dakota.

I trust this study as much as I trust the unemployment data put out by the regime, budget forecasts put out by the regime and Obamacare predictions re costs, doctors, hospitals made by Obama personally. Add in whatever Putin tells Obama concerning Soviet intentions.

Do you have an actual methodological issue with the study, data collection, or analysis, or do you just not like what it says?

This thing would pass a middle school review without being shot full of holes. Absolutely no detail in how this crap was done and painfully short on definitions.

    What would you like defined?

    Definitions provided by the paper:

Those are the three main metrics under consideration. What is confusing about the definition of any of the three?

Sort of an amateurish analysis but the point is still made.

I would like to see each state become less reliant on federal dollars.

seemed pretty clear to me. Like I said, Wallethub puts out a bunch of rankings. As far as I've seen before, it's not a partisan site.
of course, what we have it is just the same old stuff: Conservatives don't like the result ....

I never had an issue with state and property taxes because it leads to a smaller dependence on the federal government. There is obviously going to be waste but states can best decide for themselves being in a position of allocating the funds where they are most needed. The least dependence on the federal government the better IMO.

So you're blaming the blue states?

Without opening the article, I'm guessing that southern cracker states are more dependent on federal government handouts, while protesting the most loudly about them. There is a reason for this. Federal handouts typically make people less productive (by requiring them to be non-productive to continue getting handouts) and the states have to make up the difference by providing services to these people for free (they only pay sales taxes on what they spend, not income taxes or property taxes). They are also more likely to buy and sell goods and services on the black market, avoiding even paying sales taxes. Non-productive people are more likely to need visits from the police, free medical care, special help in school, etc. So productive people have to work that much harder to support the lifestyles of able-bodied non-productive people. The main thing stopping able-bodied non-productive people from being productive is democrats and their welfare programs. Any questions?

Is social security benefitsfigured iinto this? Is dedense speending figured in? A huge potion of federal dollars is spent in these two areas and rEd sStates get a disproportionate amount of this. Red sttes are less populous on average (the divisor) in the equation and your get skewed numbers.

    Low-quality fact-free bumper sticker rebuttal.

Do you have any information claiming that welfare recipients pay more in taxes than productive members of society? I didn't think so. In the absence of better information, I think we can accept my information as factual.

I do know there are people who benefit from welfare and work their way out of dependency and become productive members of society. (I actually know a couple of them.) But those people are few and far between, and would be far more likely to be helped through concerned charity organizations.

Government "charity" actually hurts far more than it helps, by creating dependency and enabling poor lifestyle choices (alcohol, drugs, gambling, etc.). When you add up the costs to society of a single drug addict who uses crime to supplement his welfare money (law enforcement, judicial system, prisons, etc.), and multiply them by the number of criminal drug addicts in the U.S., you realize what a failure the welfare system is. Net result: democrats take other people's money to pay non-productive people to do drugs and commit crimes.

You would also expect there to be some correlation between federal dollars spent and the percentage of state land owned (therefore managed) by the federal govt. This is a particularly important factor in the western states:
