I don't know; that's what Spurrier said along with 'we are not going to worry about it and when he wants to be part of team again we'll let him' or something like that.

When a coach says that his star player 'doesn't want to play' vs. 'can't play', it's going to be a big deal...especially when said played is forecast to be the #1 selection in the upcoming draft.

"Can't" implies he is not permitted to. If he's cleared by trainers/doctors/whatever, and if he's of the caliber of player that Clowney is, and if he's not suspended, then the issue is entirely a "want" issue isn't it?

Just my opinion, but I don't think there's anything wrong with saying that Clowney doesn't want to play if he's hurt but not injured. And there's nothing wrong with Clowney not wanting to play (assuming he's being honest with himself and his teammates).

Total mutiny for Clowney to say he isn't playing.... Then pack up your stuff and repay USC for your free tuition. You are there because of football now pay your dues.

Guys you have to take the good and the bad with Steve. He isn't shy to light a fire under a player ..or to turn on the media. Its called strategy. He is great at it.

This is a message to future recruits.
He doesn't want to sound unsupportive to his NFL guys.

He made his point to Clowney...and then "defended" him against the media backlash

    Again: Strategy

    Nothing to see here.

I was using 'can't' to imply not able to play rather than not permitted to. I watched the press conference again and Spurrier actually used both phrases...he said Clowney told him right before the game that he 'couldn't play' because his ribs hurt and he couldn't run and then 10 seconds later Spurrier says...'if he doesn't want to play, he doesn't have to play'....he was the one who transformed Clowney's 'can't play' into 'doesn't want to play'. If you add to that his demeanor, which is clearly dismissive of Clowney's excuse, it's clear that Spurrier created the entire controversy.

that's fine...but as you can see, some actually can't see through Spurrier's gamesmanship and actually believe his 'the evil media is after me' concoction.

I think in the post you're talking about people were saying Spurrier was taking a jab at our coaching staff for not seeing his talent in practice.

At least that is how I remember it. Of course you may be referencing an entirely different thread, as I don't claim to keep up with every one.

I saw the press conference, but do not necessarily agree with the consensus that may have been evident in that thread. In my mind, Spurrier was disappointed that his star did not play. Any coach would be. We all know that SoS speaks his mind. Doesn't mean he threw him under the bus. And we still have no quote directly indicating an under-bus throwing. IOW - Gator fans on that thread might be guilty of the same thing the press is doing: over-interpreting Spurrier's comments.

Yes we do. It was clear that Spurrier didn't buy into Clowney's excuse. I've never heard a coach talk that way about an injured player before...I know Spurrier speaks his mind and I have no problem with that, but he needs to stick by his words rather than change course two days later and blame the media for something that he entirely started.

Erratic behavior or strategy? Only the Spur knows.

I have noticed that every time he seems to go off half-cocked (no pun intended), it is interpreted by the faithful as strategic. When other coaches do it--Les Miles?--, it is crazy

He can criticise all he wants but when the media comes down hard don't act like you didn't do it.

Hope he isn't planning to go back to DC. No one there appreciates his genius. OTH with the other genius, Shanahan, leading the 'Skins into the wilderness, maybe they would forgive, if not forget.

You know what's funny about SOS in Washington? He had a better record after two seasons than Shanny did. But he's universally considered a failure there.
