Hey coach, you are the one that threw him under the bus originally. This is why this has been a national news story.

Spurrier cautioned Gamecocks fans about one of the unfortunate realities of the media business at the national (and perhaps local too) level - controversy sells. "I think they like us OK, but when they can find something and create something spectacular or create anger or hatred or create problems, that's what they're paid to do," Spurrier said. "These guys are paid to create crap, as we know. If they just said everything is fine, that doesn't stir people up and that doesn't make people mad. You have to learn who to listen to in life. I learned that very young, probably when I went to Florida to coach. "Don't be a victim of what your enemies say. You have to learn who to listen to and who not to listen to, especially in sports because everybody is talking about us all the time." - See more at: http://southcarolina.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1560308#sthash.YbpqP5g3.UgwyBcwU.dpuf

"Your enemies will try to torment you every chance they get if you're successful," Spurrier said. "If you're not successful, they don't worry about you. They'll try to find something nasty to say about you and try to disrupt what you're doing. We're 26-5 since Jadeveon has been on the team. Maybe some people don't like that. Everybody doesn't love South Carolina in the national media. We're not a fan favorite in too many places except our state. We don't have a lot of love out there, but that's OK."

Was it something literal that Spurrier said that constituted throwing his player under the bus or were people attempting to read into his comments something that he didn't actually say?

Good question Wes. There's a multipage post about Spurrier taking a jab at Murphy when in fact he praised Murph and his play. He practically said he wanted him on his team and he loved him. Wait...maybe I read too much into that! I think when people hear Spurdog speak he's jabbing someone. I have no idea where this comes from. Maybe it's the soap opera effect. Gotta have drama!

Why don't people just take what Spurrier says at face value instead of trying to dissect it for some subliminal message that just isn't there?

This is classic Spurrier... when he wants to take pressure off the team, or here a player, he makes himself a diversion for the media.

He is very good at it too!

Spurrier has always sounded like a jerk when he answers reporters' questions, and it was no different than when he was being asked about the Clown. If he wanted to sound supportive of his player, Spurrier sure didn't do a good job of it.

Not sure if he was doing this with Clowney, but Spurrier did it quite well with ref$u's late hits on Danny in '96 -- remember Mickey Andrews' "echo of the whistle." By the time Sugar Bowl kickoff rolled around, it seemed like everybody -- ref$u players and coaches, referees, fans from both schools -- was uptight, except the Gator players and coaches. As the Sugar Bowl game went on, ref$u players were like jello on the field and the refs called a good game, too.

    Classic Spurrier...

So does this mean "If you're not a 'cock, you're a...?"

The old "Us Against The World" mentality...

Yes...diversion at it's finest. What's funny is he'll have a scribbled down list of topics to reference during some pressers. Much more entertaining than typical coach speak.

Was that untrue? My understanding was that it was up to Clowney to decide whether he wanted to play or not.

Go listen to the press conference after their game vs Kentucky. Someone made a thread about it soon afterwards and as far as I recall, the general consensus on this forum was that Spurrier attacked Clowney pretty hard.

I'm not quite sure what's more absurd...Spurrier claiming he did no such thing and that the entire thing is a fabrication by the evil media who wants to do S. Carolina and its players harm or people actually agreeing with such a cockamamie story.

Is it not ok to criticize a unit for poor play or do you not think they played poorly? What's the difference between throwing the defense under the bus and identifying that they played poorly?
