The "Framily" plan pretty much means you have to add your friends, as you get discounts for signing more people on. They want you to sign up to 10 people, and I believe they all have to be new. So basically, you need to be really liberal about who your "family" and even friends are in order to come up with 10 new Sprint converts.

The commercial, IMO, is attempting to get you to think about your family and friends in just that way--just sign up anybody. No one in the commercial goes together. The little girl doesn't speak English and has animated blue birds flying around here, like Snow White. The mother has a crazy southern accent. The father (gerbil) sounds like a muffled Andrew Dice Clay. Grandpa is black. An uncle is a goth or something. This isn't a family, it's a Framily, because the average person won't be able to fill out this circle of 10 unless they really cast a wide net.

The song is "Home Sweet Home".

Considering the fact that the grandfather is not white (as you pointed out), perhaps you are taking an absurdist commercial a bit too seriously.

He did a movie where a dude sung David Bowie tunes in Portuguese, so why not Motley Crue in French?

I've seen the commercial several times and every time it's left me baffled. It's a mess.

But it never occurred to me that it was somehow unfair to white dads.

Maybe you just arent down with the white dad struggle. If TV is any guide to that, its tough being married to a woman out of your league looks wise, having good-natured hijinks with friends, and having adorable, but trouble making children to contend with. :)

As a white dad, I feel a level of oppression that few of you will ever understand. It is a horrible struggle.

My takeaway from that commercial was to try to see if I could find a full length version of Home Sweet Home in French. Seriously, the song sounds fantastic.

And the entire point of the commercial was that they aren't a family at all, just like you don't have to be a family to be together on Sprint's "framily" plan. I thought they were pretty clear that it was just a random collection of folks when the "framily" consisted of a live action version of an animated musical character who only speaks French, a boy who loves scrapbooking, a southern lady, a gerbil voiced by Andrew Dice Clay, a college aged man and his goth roommate Gor-Don, an old black man, and a latina "aunt."

I understand the idea of an family + friends....but the gerbil or hamster had "Dad" printed below it.

Dad. As in the little girl's Dad. Just like the blonde woman had Mom.

The rodent was the Dad. I am not a sensitive - you offend me- person.

But this is just another case of the "white Dad" being portrayed as something < than others....just another buffoon.

So the white guy portrayed as a hamster has a black father, or was that the white mother? Or is the whole thing just supposed to be absurdist?

Appears so. Black dad who does yoga to Hamster Dad.

Yes, absurd ! I would like to see a commercial of a national product in which the white Dad is portrayed as "wise" and the black guy as the inept. Or the woman as the inept.

Maybe you can ask someone for old VHS/beta tapes of commericals from basically the invention of TV until maybe the late 80s/90s. Recall the good old days before the white man had it so rough.

Better yet, go buy a Cadillac instead of a Sprint contract. They've got a commercial with a grandiose rich white prick dad in it, so vote with your wallet. :)

But they're a corporate sibling of Chevy, who had a gay marriage in one of their commercials that portrayed the dad as a woman and a gay family in another that portrayed the mom as a man!!!

Damn, never mind then. Guess there isnt any place for the white man anymore, other than government, business and pretty much every major institution in the US.

How do you know the "dad" would have otherwise been a white guy?

Seeing as how the commercial also portrayed an old black guy as being the "grandpa" of a bunch of white kids, you clearly can't draw that conclusion from the race of the rest of the family. So for all you know the hamster actually took the place of another black man, or an asian, or a hispanic person, or a woman...

Wait, it's almost like the whole purpose of the commercial was to draw a bunch of nonsensical and absurdist "family ties" to show that you don't actually need to be a real family to use Sprint's "framily" plan. But that can't be it, notwithstanding that none of the rest of the supposed family made any sense either, it must be that they specifically decided to put that gerbil in there to pick on white men.

So if something was done wrong before our time, it must be "corrected" by doing wrong in the opposite direction?

Your logic is flawed. If it was legal, but is wrong to enslave black people, would you, logically, then (using your brain) conclude that it is legal to enslave white people for same # yr?

If one person runs a red light, does that mean that the car going in the opposite direction should be granted the right to go thru the red light too?

No, but if you live in Miami, three more are coming right behind it.
