Just a heads-up if you want to get a jump on booking a cheap, refundable flight to a midwestern city that's home to Warren Buffett. :D

My daughter works for SW so I can fly for free but it is standbye. I just hope that Oklahoma State or Oklahoma doesn't make the CWS so there is space available out of Tulsa.

That is a pretty easy drive: 5-6 hours? Beats the hell out of the rest of the country in terms of driving distance to Omaha. I travelled once from Florida and twice from Central Texas. You would think that Texas is practically there compared to Gainesville but no, it is still a brutal drive from Austin.

21 hours from Gainesville. Done it twice and have yet to see them win a game. Here's hoping 3rd time is a charm!

Haha, in hindsight I'm not sure why I put cheap in there. Omaha isn't served by many carriers and flights there are usually pretty expensive. I almost booked out of Tampa this week and it was going to be roughly $400. Also I shouldn't have said "refundable" since Southwest gives you a voucher to be used on a different flight if you cancel. "Reusable", not "Refundable".

Fly in to KC. Rent a car (you have to rent one anyway). And then drive to Omaha.

The best deal in my opinion if you don't mind driving and are flexible with your take off and return dates is to fly Allegiant out of Sanford into Des Moines and drive 2 hours straight west...its nonstop both ways and super cheap..they nickel and dime you for baggage fees but you still come out way ahead compared to other airlines...that's what I did in 2011

Fair enough but this is Omaha and the US. If you want to do anything but go downtown or take one trip to the zoo, you better have a car. This isn't NY or Europe... It is freakin' Omaha, Nebraska.

Love Omaha as you all know. It is just that Omaha is as mass transit friendly as Houston...

Definitely an idea I could get behind. Des Moines has a nice capital building too.

We are a little early with these chats :) Don't want to jinx the team you know ;)

That said--KC and DSM are both easy drives from Omaha. Interstate driving surrounded by cows, beans, corns, wind turbines, and the occasional small town. Both airports are very close to the interstate as well. If you fly into DSM just remember to go south from the airport to hit the main roads. North if you want to see the gold dome of the capital building but lots of stop lights that way.

Southwest flies into DSM, Omaha, and KC. I would suggest booking your rental cars early. No money involved but better selection. You could probably book one at each place to give you flexibility.

Allegiant is an option. They fly into DSM, Omaha and a few smaller cities near-by. You may want to ship your items via USPS or UPS--cheaper than their bag fees LOL

Hotels are much much cheaper farther away from downtown Omaha. And there are nice hotels on both sides of the river. Book those early as well!!! Downtown in the focus of the CWS by all means---but it is a 15-20 minute drive from the far west part of Omaha to downtown. You can save perhaps 100 per night by staying farther away.

Several places to eat and drink at the stadium area.

There is also the Old Market Area a few blocks south of the stadium area. Lots of places to eat and drink there.

There used to be pedi-cabs in the area to move people back and forth--not sure if they still have them or not.

If others are thinking of making the trip to watch the series hotel rooms are very expensive! Olympic swimming trials are happening during the latter part of the series. Those occur across the street from the series.

Where/how did you find refundables? I checked Expedia and a few others and didn't see any...

Southwest gives you a voucher valid for one year when you cancel the flight. So as long as you plan on flying somewhere else on Southwest in the next 12 months it's essentially refundable.

I had 'em booked (in hopes of a Championship Series). I hate going back in there to get my points back, but it is what it is. Can't wait to do the same thing next year!

Haha, yep. Spent last night contemplating where we're going to go instead. Maybe Boston in August and try to squeeze in a visit to Fenway.
