Tennessee, hours after being turned down by Louisiana Tech's Mike White, have agreed on a deal to hire Southern Miss coach Donnie Tyndall, sources told ESPN on Monday night.

The deal was for five years at $8 million overall. But they were still negotiating Monday night because Tyndall wanted six years instead of five, a source with direct knowledge on the negotiations told ESPN.com senior writer Andy Katz.

Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart reached out to Tyndall, who has spent the past two seasons at Southern Miss, and the two quickly agreed to a preliminary deal.

Tyndall has led Southern Miss to the NIT each of his two seasons at the helm. He was previously the head coach at Morehead State -- where he went to the NCAA tournament twice.

I know Dave Hart wanted to go out and get an up-and-coming guy, but wow. To go with Tyndall over someone like Ben Howland....I don't get it.

I wonder why Pelphrey wasn't in the mix. Not that I want to see him go anywhere, especially to a rival, but he is deserving.

Why would Pelphrey be more deserving than others ?

Maybe this guy Tyndall is something like Billy D. - young, invigorating, honorable, believable to a recruit or to supporters. We must assume that the Tennessee AD has a certain amount of wisdom, but, then again, they did hire Lame Kiffin, so perhaps that is more than a bit of an overstatement.

If we're making assumptions, I think the safer one would be that the Tennessee AD has no amount of wisdom whatsoever.

Of course, when we hired Billy. I said, "Who? Couldn't we find somebody better." Man, aren't I a great judge of basketball coaches?

Didn't Howland have the NCAA sniffing around his program? There's a reason he doesn't have a job.

Tyndall was responsible for major infractions at Morehead St.

    Terrible hire IMO.

But it is what their fanbase deserves.
