Does Walton prefer to have a smaller squad than everyone else in the WCWS? Wash,OU, and Mich have 21 players. UT has 19. ASU has 26!!! Only Neb and Tex have 16, the same as UF. He had mentioned lack of depth compared to other teams. But I cant remember if he's carried more than 18 players. He will lose only 2 seniors this year but with only 3 recruits coming in that leaves him with 17 for next year. Its only logical that UF will finally overcome that years best team with better depth. I read somewhere that teams can carry up to 21 players so why not max out?

We are missing the Fagan sisters, Cheyenne Coyle and Brittany Schutte. So the planned
roster was 20. I'm surprised Tim didn't add a couple more girls to the 3 we have signed.
    But there is still time.

The team holds try out in the fall. That is where we got Michele Moultrie.

Softball has 12 scholarships to give, so he probably doesn't bring in bodies just for depth...but prefers to give the heart of the team a larger % scholarship.Especially snce so many are out of state.

Ever try to get 26 girls to get along? Besides, I'd rather have 19 girls getting more reps in practice than an additional 7 who aren't going to see the field.

And again, add more teen/young adult bodies, add more drama.

That has got to be one of the most amazing juggling acts to manage the 12 scholly's, actually it's 11.7. The in state girls will most likely secure some bright futures funding that helps ease that burden. I remember going through this with my daughter and I was surprised to learn that some scholarships or money sources not provided by athletic financial aid can actually count against the 11.7. Throw in the occasional multi sport athlete and it gets real interesting.

I see 12 on just about every site relating to scholarships. We went through the recruiting process back in 06'-07'. I kept hearing 11.7 and figured that the 12 was just a convenient round up number. That number is also only for a fully funded program which I was surprised to find even some very notable schools are not. Whether its 11.7 or 12 it's still a hell of a job to maintain a tab on all those numbers. Gets real tricky when you pull money from a 2-3 year player to free up cash to reel in that out of state stud or even if the kid just didn't work out or no longer fit into the plans. I've some coaches just deal with it directly which is the proper way to do it, while others take the chicken $h1t route and make the kid miserable and just try to run them off.

Get 26 girls to get along? I can't even get my wife and girlfriend to be civil to each other.

Tough for Walton to recruit right now when you consider the youth of his current squad. We will bring almost everyone back.

    Walton's,
Real challenge is going to be keeping everyone happy. Recruiting will Not be his issue.
It's going to be keeping everyone who deserves to be in the line up playing. Otherwise turnover is going to continue as we've seen over the last six years. He's gone thru some players over the last 6 years..... He better recruit the right kinds of kids and families..

    But hey whatdoiknow !

How does this differ from other coaches of other elite teams with identical number of scholarships to give?

Hard to feel too sorry for softball programs when baseball has spends 11.7 on 35 guys.

Also, a DI coach I know well once told me that he likes to keep his roster at about 16 to avoid the inevitable issues that come up with girls and there relationships with one another. Male and female athletes approach sports, playing time, etc. in very different ways, so I've witnessed.

    Griz,

I totally get it. But the baseball coach also is dealing with the fact that 10-15 percent of his roster may be depleted by underclassmen taking the signing bonus and leaving the program. So having that many on the roster is hedging his bet. Women don't have that option.

Total meltdown. Noone who knows will tell the whole story, but the strife that accompanied their departure destroyed last season.

Let's just say that we're better off without them.

Biggest mystery is Schutte who departed long after the end of last season, she didn't come back for her senior year! Do you think we could have used Brittany's offense in Supers and WCWS? I would think she has to have some regrets for leaving after the season the Gators just delivered.

The other 3 (Fagans + Coyle) were wrapped up in some kind of mutiny and had to be dismissed from the team.
