Tell me. Where did Zook "fail" as a DC? He had two jobs as a DC and was not considered a failure at either. Like many Gators, you forgot that Spurrier offered the DC job to Zook after the 1995 season, but Zook turned him down (Jon Hoke would do the same when SOS went to USCe). Zook was a well-regarded DC at New Orleans. Yes, they crashed at the end of the season, but that had nothing to do with Zook. The Saints had serious issues in the locker room at the end of the year.
So where did he "fail?"
He picked it up where Pell and Hall left off in 1985. Spurrier didn't inherit a team beset by mediocrity. That was a team beset by sanctions and scandal. He was very fortunate that he was left a heavily laden cupboard by Galen Hall.
Still pretty strong, IMO. Hall had a very strong team ready in 1990.
