this is big news. Unfortunately it means we won't get to see him play.

It's why I think the NBA/college basketball should adopt a baseball style rule. Either declare for the NBA draft out of high school, or play at least 2 years in college (it's 3 for baseball). There are players that are either talented enough for the NBA, and/or have no desire to go to college, they shouldn't be playing NCAA basketball. At the same time, one-and-dones benefit nobody. Player barely has time to develop, and the school is left to continually replace players.

Sad to see this stuff happen - probably at least. I haven't had a chance to read anything about this today other than seeing people speak of general amateurism issues. Anything more specific come out?

OT - Cal/UK dodged a bullet here. Mudiay was UK's top target and it was all but a given, at one point, that he was next in line. If he commits, UK is now without a backup point guard and Ulis likely goes elsewhere. So UK could have ended up with nothing (well maybe more "smoke" for Cal of course) but ended up with a good multi-year point guard. I've seen UK's staff avoid problems before, but this one was luck.

The idea of "amateurism" in sports is a bizarre joke, and it will be a great day once they get rid of it for all (hopefully the courts do this soon). In no other area of life are you forbidden from reaping a monetary reward for your hard work and abilities. It is weird that Cameron Newton's dad was villified for shopping his son around for the most money for his employment, since that is exactly what you do in every other area of life (how much money did Newton make Auburn? I hope his family got a nice fat check from whatever booster(s) paid him).

I don't know the specifics of Mudiay, but if I was the parent of a wildly talented HS basketball player and wasn't in great financial situation, I would basically try to get as much money as possible. This will help the family out in the near term until you can go to the NBA and actually get paid over the table. If you get caught, go to Europe for a year. There are many things which are morally wrong, but seeking monetary compensation for your athletic talents is not one of them.

The "NCAA is out to get UK" conspiracy theories would be off the charts if Mudiay had signed with UK.

Good for him. He should absolutely do what is best for him and his family.
