Jury still out on Florida's secondary prospects
There has been a lot of conversation about how the Gators' defensive backfield is loaded with elite NFL-caliber talent, but I believe we should slow down some of that chatter after taking a closer look at Louchiez Purifoy, Marcus Roberson and Jaylen Watkins. Although I definitely believe each player will play at the next level, I'm not convinced there is a shutdown corner in the group.

Roberson is definitely our best defensive back on the team, though incredibly underrated by our fans. The kid is good. He should go in the top two rounds, but because of hype I think Purifoy might actually go before him.

VHIII is our best corner. Thank God he can't leave!

i don't think all three are first rounders by any stretch. but for a college team, this is a very good group of backs when you add in hargreaves, poole, gorman, and riggs. its no NFL secondary but its a pretty impressive one for a college team.

VH3 is the only back that hasn't been soundly beaten by a WR this year. He's been caught upon, but barely.

Roberson is correct, by far. He has been injured this year which is bad luck for him, but there is a difference between Roberson and Hargreaves.... Roberson has been shutting the best down for 3 years straight, though I do think Hargreaves will get there, but until then Roberson has proved himself and its a shame the fans show him less love. I love watching him play, and if he decides to come back to play because he wants a higher draft stock, and play beside Hargreaves, then Florida fans should be very grateful that they will see possibly the best duo at corner they have ever witnessed at Florida.

I don't know when Roberson was soundly beaten. VH3 got soundly beaten against Missouri, but he's a freshman.

If Roberson comes back, our secondary will be ridiculous. VH3 and Roberson at corner, Poole at nickle, Riggs/Gorman/Maye/Neal/Harris at safety, Washington wherever the staff sees him best, and this doesn't even include the corners we have coming in for 2014. Crazy.

I have to say I've been really impressed by Gorman this year. He's only made one bad play all year (a missed tackle against Mizzou), and considering how little he played in previous years, that's really impressive. He should start next year IMO

VH III is the best. Roberson is solid. Purifoy has the honey badger appeal as he's always involved in big plays but his cover skills are lacking. You take away the blocked punts, unblocked corner blitzes, and gift-wrapped pick six's and Purifoy doesn't crack the two deep.

The talent is loaded for next year to be a great run if everything falls into place. I really hope Roberson comes back. I've really been impressed with Gorman as well, along with Riggs. I think next year when they add in Neal/Harris/and Washington..... This secondary will be lock down and lights out.

Roberson was beaten earlier in the year a couple of times. I was at the Mizzou game so I didn't get to see the beatings up close.

I feel like Watkins is the corner that gets picked on the most. No?

I agree. I've often seen Roberson beat on plays and he's committed seeeeeeveral PI's. He's ok, definitely not a lock down CB, neither is Purifoy. I honestly think vh3 is the best we have currently and he will only continue to get better.

Purifoy gets thrown at the most, he try's to jump the throws, if he was a better tackler would be a great safety, takes to many chances to be the last line of defense. Wouldn't be surprised if he plays more offense than defense in the NFL,....which might not be a lot of either. Being a great athlete versus having great production is an issue. Everyone does realize Purifoy did intercept his 1st pass a couple of weeks ago, that's not due to the ball not being throw his way either. If Roberson continues in the weight room he may play the most. VHIII appears to be the real deal! The other corners still have a ways to go. It's hard to play as much man to man defense as they are asked to do.

You don't have to look further than the first play against Mizzou to see one huge difference btw Roberson and VH3. Everyone thinks VH3 is better bc of a few picks, but they ignore the help we've given him and the fact that he let up that first play bc he wanted to jump the short route. VH3 will be rivaled only by Haden by the time he leaves here, but right now he's not on the same level as Roberson in all facets of the game.
