MTSU was one of the teams I previewed and wrote about for Lindy's magaizine - - - so I can offer some insight. They did go to the tourney last year --- winning 28 games and going 19-1 in the SunBelt. But they lost to St. Mary's in the opening round. Last season they led their league in defense, allowing 58ppg. But they lost a lot --- 3 starters are gone, and 58% of their offense. Their best player is forward Shawn Jones - 6'8 forward who is strong defensively and on the glass. Kerry Hammonds is a pretty versatile and explosive wing player. The back court is pretty new. A couple touted juco transfers and an NC State transfer.... Jaquan Raymond join senior Tweety Knight. Knight is a solid perimeter defender. They are a pretty big team across the floor, with 8 guys 6'6 or taller. They will prove to be a good rebounding and defensive team, but initially may have some offensive shortcomings. Overall, I think MTSU will be a force in the new C-USA - - -but they have a lot of different pieces to gel. I expect it will be a physical game, but one Florida should handle.
