Drivers could soon be filling their cars with petrol created using algae thanks to a new process that converts the organisms into crude oil in less than an hour.

Engineersat theU.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have created a chemical process that produces useful crude oil minutes after they pour in harvested algae - a verdant green paste with the consistency of pea soup.

    ...

'Cost is the big roadblock for algae-based fuel,' said Douglas Elliott, the laboratory fellow who led the PNNL team's research.

'We believe that the process we've created will help make algae biofuels much more economical.'

I've heard about this. Wonder how much it'll cost Exxon-Mobil et al to make it go away.

Cost is the biggest factor for Photo Bio Reactors making the Algae . I'm in the process of obtaining a Patent for my low cost industrial scale Bio Reactor . To grow the Algae , it takes more than 1 Hour , on average , it can be harvested 1 week to 10 days depending on the species of Algae .

From the article , they mention the hydrothermal liquefaction process , this is energy intensive & expensive . The University of Texas is researching a less expensive way of Lipid extraction using ultra sound .

Your neighbors might complain about your Refinery when the Fractional Distillation Towers start going up . LOL

    Not if you:

    a) Dress up the distillation towers like giant Christmas trees

    and

    b) Give your neighbors free gas every couple weeks.

Any oil company that could make it make them more money than what they are doing would glorify it, not bury it.

Quickest way to make sure it goes nowhere at all as a viable and readily available energy source? Give the government exclusive control.

^ Correct. There is a reason that Exxon is sitting on billions of dollars in cash. As soon as the next big thing comes out, they will buy the company and start profiting from it. Exxon is not locked in on making their money from oil. They just want to make money. They know that oil is not the long-term future of energy, and they will need to get on board when the next big thing arrives.

If you want to bump yourself off but don't have the guts, simply invent something that makes crude oil obsolete.

Sadly , you're correct . That's why it makes sense to do things in a very public way and have many people involved .
