well they do have a naval base there already, so it's not earth shattering that they would be heading that way

It's largely posturing, the ships they are sending aren't ones with offensive capabilities (i.e., not what you would send if you actually anticipated a naval confrontation).

They sent a sigint ship and a number of landing craft.

For one, no one has battleships (as in there isn't one in active service in any navy that I know of). And second, not all naval ships are offensive. The intelligence ship has a huge radar and sonar array, but its weapons are solely surface to air guns and missiles designed to protect itself. The landing ships are designed to put troop carriers on the beach, or pick people up, neither of which do you a lot of good in a naval confrontation.

The additional ships listed in the linked CBS article? Another signal intelligence ship, and a frigate that is the single oldest active ship in the Russian Navy (commissioned in the 1960s).

It's not a naval force that projects any real measure of offensive power.

No doubt it is a posturing move with everyone involved beginning to flex their muscles...much as you compared to playground taunting.

On the other hand though--this entire event has the potential to literally be one of the most explosive in a very long time. Wrong interpretations...misunderstanding moves and words....and boom--we got a huge problem.

Standoff In The Mediterranean: The US vs Russian Navies

    http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-09-05/standoff-mediterranean-us-vs-russian-navies

While the leaders of the two superpowers are shaking hands for the camera in St. Petersburg, their navies are sending a different message. Here is the latest breakdown of the world's key navies in the Mediterranean theater of naval operations as of last night. By now it is likely woefully outdated, now that there are reports the Chinese have joined the fray too (not on the side of the 'free droning world').

leave a con to make a mountain out of a molehill---or in this case...make a battleship out of a landing craft.

That the Russians aren't sending more substantial naval vessels, etc is to me a sign that it is a bluff, and a pretty weak bluff at that. That is, if it isn't a force sent just to pick up Russians who might be in danger.

let's see---intel vessels and landing craft. Yup sure looks like they are sending a massive force(cynicism)

Simply put---that is the type of force we'd be sending to an area we look to not want to get involved in but want to pull civilians out of and to get some intel at the same time.

But leave it to anti-Obama types to lie, spin, distort in their anti-Obama propaganda

News Update: Chinese landing craft with 1,000 marines for Syria – reports

    http://www.debka.com/newsupdate/5640/

Western naval sources reported Friday that a Chinese landing craft, the Jinggangshan, with a 1,000-strong marine battalion had reached the Red Sea en route for the Mediterranean off Syria. According to DEBKAfile, Beijing has already deployed a number of warships opposite Syria in secret. If the latest report is confirmed, this will be the largest Chinese deployment in the Middle East in its naval history.

And if the chit were to hit the fan there is a good chance it could be their last one for a long time. These people don't want to mix it up with our carrier fleets.
