Moscow (AFP) - Russia has provisionally agreed to reopen a major Cold War listening post on Cuba that was used to spy on the United States, a Russian daily reported Wednesday after President Vladimir Putin visited the island last week.

Kommersant reported that Russia and Cuba had agreed "in principle" to reopen the Lourdes base, mothballed since 2001, citing several sources within Russian authorities.
"The agreements were finalised while President Vladimir Putin visited Havana last Friday," the respected daily wrote.

We need to make Cuba the 51st state and be done with it.

Should have started moving toward it a long time ago.

So they are a little socialist... We didn't kick California out of the Union. A trade embargo since the 60's with no tangible benefit is laughable.

We should have never turned it loose after the Spanish-American War in the first place.

I think we had a chance to buy it one time and passed. Might be mistaken on that though.

I know the Confederacy looked at it before the "Late Unpleasantness" made it improbable

    Sure, but what's it matter?

If they start bringing in missiles or troops call me concerned. What benefit does "a Cuban spy base" afford them? The ability to listen to WBIG 105.9 without an internet connection? This isn't 1963.

If I ran a country and wanted to extend my intelligence network geographically, I'd be sure that Yahoo! had a good story on it.

You understand that, of course, because you are from Maine. But think of a lot of the rest of folks out there who think Putin is a nice young Senator from Saskatchewan, and you can see the opportunity for some misdirected Cold War intrigue.

With the forgiving of the money Cuba owed and this it appears Putin is worried the U.S. could gain closer ties to Cuba.

It was written on here not too long ago that the new generation with Cuban ancestry are more willing to soften our stance toward the island. Maybe Putin is reading TH.

To be clear, I'm from Florida. Alachua General to be precise. I'm merely serving time in exile. :D

But, yes. Russia, Cuba, and Spy in one title is sure to increase advertising revenue.

I heard that the Rooskies will also be transferring advanced electronic technology to the Cubans, starting with dial-up modems.
