I'm using a cheap router, but I use it with a wired connection. So I assume the upload/download is fine. If I went out and bought a very expensive one, would it increase my speeds? Remember, I'm using it wired, not wirelessly.

(From time or time I use it wirelessly) But my main question is will a new, more expensive router make a decent impact?

(I'm trying to stream live video)

how fast is your internet? Even with a standard full duplex 100mbps/100mbps wired ethernet, your internet is not going to exceed that unless you have one of the very fast tiers on one of a few providers. Thus, no real benefit.

Wireless can be a different story, especially if it's an old wireless B router or you get poor signal quality.

Thanks, helix. How can I test my speed? I think I did it once before, but not really sure. Aren't there websites that do it? I'll test it and post back here with results. You can tell me what you think- If it's worth buying a new one or not. I'm using cox as my provider, btw.

Thoughts? I'm using an old Belkin G+ MIMO router. We bought it years ago. Even if the speed doesnt improve, I think it's time for a new one. I get disconnected from time to time while on the ps4. Yeah, it may have nothing to do with the router, but it gives me an excuse to upgrade! lol

The older your router the more connection issues you will get though. At least based on my personal experience.

Until you need to restart your router more then once a week, or until your isp's speed exceeds the routers capacity (unlikely in our lifetime at current rate of change) upgrading the router is unnecessary.

If you're running wirelessly on one of the fastest FIOS tiers, Google Fiber, or the fastest comcast or brighthouse tiers, you'd benefit from upgrading your 802.11A, B, or G router, and possibly even your N (to AC) router depending on the size of your house and your signal strength.

I agree. Had AT&T for many years but so far I am pleased with Comcast.

Also I remember getting more then 100 mbps up last time I'd tried this.

Funny story... The website breaks if you can upload/download > 350 mbps. Atleast in firefox.
