it's on Rivals national recruiting message board---

needless to say it's a lively topic

The OP's premise is that religion in general has billions of people basically grubbing to God for their own life everlasting and not doing much to do good in the here and now.

Much as I tend to do some slamming of some religious leaders and the blind faithful who follow them--- I disagree with that OP's premise

I find that most religious people I've met do make sincere efforts to do good for other people---regardless of the other person's nationality, gender, sexual preference, even if other person has a different religion or no religion at all.

My take on how religion is perceived by many is that it is like other things---a few bad apples giving a poor reputation to a lot of good apples. Mainly due to the attention the bad apples get. Bad apples, be they religious people, actors/actresses, politicians, athletes, etc do a lot of bad stuff and the media gives them air time---that is MSM, left wing MSM, and right wing MSM.

As a Catholic I can tell you that my church does tons for the needy all over the globe so you can call that selfish if you choose but I call it giving.

OP of that thread sounds like a moron. Most of the world's charitable work and general institutional compassion comes from private religious organizations. Most of the world's ugly, bloody institutional death has come from secular statism.

    Selfish and arrogant.

If God and Jesus are so great and forgiving, he will forgive me for not believing in a story fabricated and changed over time then translated many different times.

Whether it's silly or not depends if we're talking about Islam or Christianity.
    Right guys?

Yep, those pro-aborts are the most religious people I know. It's gospel truth that a fetus is just a blob of tissue and a human being does not equal a person.

Some, maybe. But there are many that walk the walk.

There are about 7 billion people on this planet.
There are about 2 billion Christians.

Jesus, hell is going to be a crowded place!!

I think you have a couple posters on here already who are showing what's selfish and what isn't.
I can't speak for the other posters on here, but when I go to church or try to do good, it's not to save my own azz. I'm trying to live up to my reason for living and help those less fortunate. I never once have thought "boy, this will look good on Judgement Day".
If I had my way, I'd go up to the Northwest Territories and never see another human being again. Then I go to church or crack open the good book and hear my Creator imploring me to do more and help those who are hungry, are naked, are poor. So to answer the question- NO, religion is the most selfless thing there is.

Gatorbill---such a comment implies you to already be dead and having come back to life or pseudo life---aka zombie

Faith is belief in something that can't be proven. so if you have proof other than 'promise' from guys dead over 200o years please state what it is......have a feeling you are going to go by what some robe wearing ancient claim to be fact. Thing is, Islam is based on promises from similarly garbed folk.

looks like you are one of the types who gives religion a negative reputation

Can't speak for Bill and I do agree with your definition of faith. But the proof for myself and Bill and other Christians is The Holy Spirit.
