Rule comes from a good place but it is idiotically enforced.

The helmet is on the face mask. The pic also doesn't show that he jumped.

And unfortunate call, but the right one.

Yes, but that is because the WR's head snapped down onto Riggs's helmet when he hit him. Riggs's helmet is chest high in this shot.

You simply can't penalize or eject a guy when he makes a play like that, the receivers instinct is going to be to tuck his head and chin to the fetal position , if the defender hits him in the chest with his face mask there is obviously going to be contact with his crown to the defenders chin, football

    I
Maybe but I don't think you can launch and fire with your helmet in the chest, either. When i saw it live, I didn't think it was helmet to helmet, but that the crown of the helmet went into the chest. I'm pretty sure that's also targeting.

Yeah, your points are valid. I just feel like the rules shouldn't allow for this to be an ejectable hit. Heck, I don't even think this one should have been a penalty. This wasn't even close to being as vicious as the hit that got Poole ejected earlier in the season.

The penalty is fine, ejecting a player is ridiculous. This rule has to change in the offseason.

With all the scrutiny and emphasis on this rule, I think once the ref saw the launch, he was throwing the flag.

The receiver came down on Riggs, which made the hit appear to be targeting. There was nothing wrong with Riggs' defense on the play.

By rule you are correct. Which made me wonder why there wasn't a targeting call on the hit that injured Purifoy on his punt return against Arkansas (think that was the game), where the player speared him in his thigh.

it's a simple rule to follow--don't lead with the helmet on a tackle. players know the rule but still do it.

Can't believe they missed the knee to the stomach by the receiver!

The problem is that it is selectively enforced. I saw them all day long, and only a few of them were called.

The game was over from that first play...bs call.

    Defense was missing Riggs.
AND also Brian Poole should have had 3 ints.
