Yup, Paula's grandmotherly personality was her brand. A whiff of racism kinda taints that. Her team handled this horribly.

Through all of this, no one bothers to give a damn if she's actually a racist.

She isn't and that's what is sad here

How would you prove that one way or the other?

    Well:

    A. How would you quantify racism

    and

    B. How can you know that she's not?

she's 66 years old for crying out loud. what, she's been going to klan meetings for 45 years and people didn't know about it?

they've operated that business way before she was famous and her racism and treatment toward employees just slipped out now?

i don't want to be misunderstood here.

however, what i am saying is that what someone does in their life (and she's 66, so there's a lot of body of work to go on here) should paint a picture of who they really are.

hard to be a closet racist for 66 years.

this is part of the problem.

you can do this with anyone can't you?

if she floats, she's a witch. if she drowns, she's wasn't.

I'm not sure you understand "racism" then if you think it requires being a KKK member or abusing employees.

i was being over the top sarcastic.

look, this is another part of the issue here.

what is racism? who defines it? who gets to determine that?

can they set up the rules however they want to destroy someone when the mood suits them?

Well that's my point entirely. "Racism" is a matter of perception. In this case, a good amount of people perceive wanting a slave themed wedding and using the word "nigger" to be racist.

If you don't, then you don't think she's racist. But the blowback indicates others may feel differently.

There arent any absolute hard rules that I'm aware of. Its how you are perceived. Saying or doing things that sound or look racist are going to make people think you are racist, whether you actually are or not.

look, i am not trying to defend anything she did in any way. that's not what i am saying here and that's not what i mean.

what i am saying here is that people know that woman. not me, personally.

but, there are people who have had interaction with her for god knows how long. some are keeping their mouths shut, because it's best to keep your mouth shut in this environment.

but, several have also come out and said i know the woman and she's not a racist.

doesn't mean that these companies haven't responded in the proper way either. i think they have.

it just bothers me that some stupid moment(s) can define who you are forever. i guess it's not the first time or last time it has happened and it's not exclusive to comments regarding race.

This doesn't mean a whole lot. People who knew say, David Duke, would (and did) say the same thing. Or Farakhan, or pretty much anyone who's said anything racist, ever.

and as someone mentioned earlier, it's a selective thing.

by all accounts, alec baldwin is a known scumbag of the highest order. yet, it's like he's coated in teflon.

I'm not sure that's the case. Baldwin could say or do things that would kill his career too. But we mentioned perception - if people perceive you as being more "tolerant" then you typically get a longer leash or more benefit of the doubt. A 66 year old white Southern lady doesnt typically have that benefit.

in whatever environment we are raised in our youth. We grow in that direction thru our lives UNLESS we make a conscious effort to change.

With older folks who were raised in a racist environment so that they themselves were racist in their youth. So it is not uncommon to see folks raised in that environment to use racist words/terms during their later life whether they remain fervently racist or made conscious effort to change. Just as people who speak two languages will tend to revert to the primary language of their youth in times of stress, etc you can expect folks who were racist in their youth to blurt racist type words in later life in a stressful situation....even if they have made real strides to not be racist.

I tend to give folks who are older and raised in strongly racist environment in their youth the benefit of the doubt if they drop the 'n' word, etc in later life if they in other areas appear to be less racist than they were in their youth.

Different people get different standards. If Baldwin was a gun carrying southerner and had made the same comments the media would have crucified him similar to Deen. He wouldn't be doing those Cap One commercials.

Totally. I don't understand the mindset that this is a grave injustice (people seem to be upset about this reality). People b%tch about "PC," but part of the reason it "exists" as a concept is to avoid saying or doing things that put people in these situations. If you want to be an anti-PC rebel, prepare to wade into the waters of varying standards.

because, usually the injustice is political in nature. i don't know paula deen's political affiliations.

however, i know why baldwin is coated in teflon. he's an outspoken, big time liberal.

it's how ted kennedy could be the "lion of the senate" after killing somebody.

This is the definition of Racism:

Racism is the belief by Caucasian people that they are superior to people of darker skin tone. Only Caucasians foster racism resulting in discrimination. African American people are incapable of racism due to their culture, sense of humor, and generational history.

There aren't people that have conservative viewpoints that are well-liked despite being known privately as being as#holes or unseemly?
