It hasn't taken place yet.
And, I admit I was skeptical about that argument when I first saw it Ben, but after doing a bit of research, I agree that argument has both textual and historical support. That argument has legs. Be interesting to see if it happens.
The house won't let that happen they will, IMHO pass a bill that has only the interest payment in it that prevent default an loads. That's the worst case scenario.
Well, your summary of what the three bills did isn't entirely right, but that's a topic for (and that is actually already contained in) another thread.
I suspect at some point they'll pass a clean CR. The votes are there to do so right now, and at some point Boehner will bring it to the floor, it's just a matter of how long. They may get an entirely meaningless concession for doing so, but it won't bear any relationship to their silly demands and I wouldn't even bet on that. Other possibility, as the pressure on them builds they try to save face by piecemealing something together and hoping no one notices that it accomplishes absolutely nothing that they got into this mess over.
They've wandered into a quagmire that there flat-out isn't a way to actually get out of while getting what they went into it for.
My point you responded to, however, is slightly different. It's that the reason Boehner hasn't just already put a clean CR on the floor is potentially because he's saving that move for the debt ceiling when it matters a great deal more.
Don't work, the reason the debt ceiling matters is because it represents the point where the US government no longer has money to make payments that it is already legally obligated to make as they come due. There's not just one interest payment that they have to make, it's fairly regular payments on the interest - and everything else - without any real legal ability for the executive to say "ok we're only making this one specific kind of payment."
And I'm not sure the GOP realizes how completely politically disastrous that one has the potential to be for them if they screw it up. Know what the largest payment that comes due a little more than a week after the "debt ceiling" drop dead date is? Every single Social Security check in the country for the next month. And the Treasury doesn't take in enough cash in the intervening time to make that payment on time without borrowing. GOP won't ever win another election if they manage to accidentally make that not go out.
obama is a fool. so childish. his way or the highway. republicans must take this country back from the left wing socialist fools! the republicans have a plan and it will all begin to show itself as obamacare blows up in this fools face. impeach this guy. i can't stand to look at his face on the news one more second. i am 22 and so many people my age love obama and believe all of his BS. i am embarassing to be a part of this generation and will always stand as a proud southern republican. SEC football, God, family, and fried chicken. go gators! get lost obama, don't come back
He won 2 elections.
Get a grip.
How do you piecemeal together a borrowing limit? It involves essentially just changing a number.
It's potentially a solution on the CR, but I have no idea how it would work on the debt ceiling.
Uh, it is looking like he bought the second one. Give enough people enough goodies and freebies and they will vote early and often.
We would be far better off if anyone other than Obama had been elected. All politicians lie and stretch the truth. Watching Obama at his news conference yesterday, I realized that this guy makes Richard Nixon look like Honest Abe. Even Clinton's lies about Monica, pale next to a normal press conference for doofus.
I was waiting for lightning to strike him down on a sunny day.
