I agree that if he's successful other bigger name schools will be looking at him
Yes, but this is the job that was rumored to be connected to Pel. McCall to FGCU is the other one that is out there.
Pelphrey may have better offers coming
I hope we can hang on to Pelphrey. I think you're off on the McCall FGCU mention...that was last year when Enfield bolted from FGCU to USC. FGCU just got a new coach after last year and he just completed his first season. If McCall goes somewhere, it won't be FGCU!
Until we made our first final four the Gator program was not a force. Since Billy took over everything changed for the better much the way SOS changed our football fortunes. I think that it is premature to write off a coach's or program's chances for success, so I'll leave that to other posters.
Billy is a HOF coach at a school with resources that make USF look like...the commuter school that it is. You're comparing apples and oranges. Are you related to Masiello or something? Why do you want him to succeed so bad? USF sucks at basketball. You are talking about a program that has made exactly ONE NCAA tournament appearance in the last 20 years. ONE. This is nothing like the history of Billy taking over a program that recently went to a Final Four and then building it up. USF = Marshall. I'll just say, again, that if Masiello turns out to be any good, he will not be at USF for long and will quickly have a job at a real basketball school.
How many schools and pro teams have been interested in Billy over the years? We increased his package with his increasing success. He's stayed and been here 18 years. Maybe USF would do the same for a successful coach. I'm not particularly a fan of USF or Masiello but I'm open to the idea of them succeeding.
You're right - it's FAU, where he used to coach. For some reason I mix up FAU, FIU, and FGCU all the time.
Looks like USF is backing out of the deal. Something fishy about the guy's background, apparently.
USF ditched the deal due to a "discrepancy." OK. He lied on his resume. Had to be a lie significant enough to scotch the deal. A background check firm found this out.
Having hired lots of people. Hundreds, actually. How is this ....deal......... announced and a hire made prior to getting background check results. Confirms what I've known for years. Half or more of high officials in the sports industry are dumb ass, phys ed major quality. If I'm pres of either of these schools, USF or Manhattan, your AD arse is in my office this morning, early.
According to my sources.... a UK forum, this may have to do with a Ky Derby ticket scam.
It appears he lied about something. To the best of my knowledge they gave him the offer, but the school's official announcement hadn't been made. It was reporters trying to get the story out first
Indeed, this would make them dumb asses, so much so that I just can't believe that this is how it worked. There was firm in charge of the search, not the phys ed administrators, so I guess they would be at fault. This firm that has probably also hired hundreds of people, and they were hired long ago, so they've been on the case for a while. The article mentions that the discrepancy in the background check was "previously undetected", insinuating that they already had the background check. Why didn't they see this earlier?
I don't know what the heck is the actual story, but I am a biologist that has never hired a single person in my life and I would never make a public hire without a background check first. It's just hard to believe that someone like Foley would.
Looks like this won't be happening after all:
Guy never graduated from UK and his resume said otherwise.

UL AD Tom Jurch & coach Rick Pitino both told @ESPN they were unaware Masiello did not graduate from Kentucky

Manhattan’s Steve Masiello never graduated from Kentucky so USF pulls offer http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/10675532/south-florida-bulls-kill-coaching-deal-steve-masiello-lying-resume …

Kentucky spokeswoman told @ESPN that Masiello never got degree from UK as indicated on Manhattan & Louisville official websites
Hasn't he learned to embellish, not lie?
I'll be honest and say there are some easy Kentucky jokes to be made at this point...
I guess he'd have to lie because don't you have to have a degree to coach?
Ouch!! So does Manhattan take him back or ??
Like... none of their players do, so why should he?
