There are very few father oriented songs in pop music. The two that stand ot to me are as follows.
First is Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle". A rather blues-sy type song that talks about the singer's father not having enough time for him. and that the singer eventually became like his day(too busy for his son). Despite the blues-sy nature of the song the song has great healing power for many people and serves as a lesson for all men to hopefully learn from. Harry Chapin died in a car accident on L.I. years ago and it was a great day of sadness on Long Island as Harry Chapin was just beginning to get a lot of recognition. And most everybody was saddened by the news. Harry Chapin's son looks a lot like his father and he frequently experiences people coming up to him and telling him how his father's song touched their life in a healing and helpful way.

"My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
    When you comin' home dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok"
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
    When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

Well, he came home from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head and said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
    When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
It's been sure nice talking to you"

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
    When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then"

For those that don't know---Harry Chapin and Billy Joel practiced and jammed together frequently with many times occurring in Cold Spring Harbor at a small park. There is likelihood those days are inspiration for album title of Billy Joel's first album.

Those years saw a number of singer songwriters who did amazing songs about everyday life, family, etc
    Harry Chapin
    Billy Joel
    Seals and Croft
    Don McLean
Cat Stevens(in his years before concerting to Islam)

they differed from 1960's folk rock in that they tended to stay away from politics in their songs and focused on life and relationships.

I hesitated to put this first song on here due to the songwriter's later changing religion and becoming very controversial. I prefer to think of the song though in the context of Cat Stevens as he was in 1970 when he wrote the song(and was still Christian). Many of his songs were promoted by the nuns/priests at the Catholic HS I attended in 1974-76.

    "Father
It's not time to make a change,
    Just relax, take it easy.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to know.
    Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.

I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy,
To be calm when you've found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

    Son
How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again.
It's always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

    Father
It's not time to make a change,
Just sit down, take it slowly.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to go through.
    Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.
(Son-- Away Away Away, I know I have to
Make this decision alone - no)
    Son
All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside,
It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it.
If they were right, I'd agree, but it's them They know not me.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.
(Father-- Stay Stay Stay, Why must you go and
    Make this decision alone?)

I am lying in bed right now; I was instructed to return so my kids could bring me breakfast in bed.

I thought I'd add some wisdom I received that I carry with me all the time:

Do you know how your kid(s) spell "love"?

A twist on an old saying:

"The best thing a mother can do for her children is love their father."

    Happy Father's Day!
