Alex Murphy plans to leave Duke at the end of the semester, sources told CBSSports.com.

Murphy, a 6-foot-9 sophomore forward from Rhode Island, has played in just five games this season for the Blue Devils, totaling 33 minutes and five points. Last season, he averaged 2.1 points in 31 games.

He redshirted his freshman season after arriving from St. Mark's (Mass.).

Florida could be a logical destination, given his older brother, Erik, just finished his four-year career with the Gators. Erik was drafted in the second round by the Chicago Bulls.

I only vaguely remember his recruitment. How strongly did we pursue him?

More of a small forward than Erik was IIRC. If he transferred, wouldn't he still have to sit out next year since he has played in games this year? Doesn't seem like it's a medical issue, so if he transferred somewhere with a required year off, doesn't he lose a whole year of eligibility, and will then only be eligible to play for one year?

Unless there's something I've missed with his career, as long as he hasn't red-shirted before, he wouldn't lose eligibility. He'd have to sit a year unless the NCAA will grant him some sort of hardship waiver.

I believe you're right on every account. I think he even reclassified a year early so he could go to Duke with the plan to redshirt and develop.

    Redshirt 2011
Played in 31 games 2012-13 (RSFrosh)
Played in 5 games so far 2013-14 (RSSoph)
Transfer year to sit out (RSJun) (2014-15)

He would only be eligible for one year, his RS Senior year, in 2015-16. Unless there's something about the reclassification and first redshirt mentioned by yourperfectenemy that I'm missing.

Yep. Big mistake going to Duke. He redshirted his first year there, so the year he sits out transferring will count against his eligibility.

I think he should be able to transfer to a program beginning in the Spring semester, so he should become eligible for his new team in December of next year and have 1.5 years to play total.

Ah, I see, I didn't know the semesters played into it like that. That changes his appeal a bit, in a positive way.

It would make a lot of sense and help us out with size next year. We have the room to add him now and he could play next December

I think Billy is going to go for any transfers he can get his hands on. It seems this is his answer to Kentucky's one and dones. He is bringing these guys in like crazy now, and good players too like Finney and Rosario and Carter. So why not o_O...anything like his brother he would be a great addition.

Gotcha. For some reason I missed him redshirting that first year. I can't believe its been that long since his recruitment.

My son played in a pickup game against him in late May and teased him about transferring ( I posted it here). He got pissed.

    Seems he was right.

He should talk to his brother about player development at UF.

Having Alex here probably wouldn't hurt with Tomas!

I'm assuming Tomas is a younger highly rated player?

I'm not seeing the appeal of Alex though. Other transfers we've taken have usually proven themselves to some degree at their current school.

Tomas is the youngest Murphy brother, class of 2017. I was mistaken though, even if Alex did decide to come here, his time wouldn't overlap with Tomas'.

Man how many Murphys are there out there? I sware they are like the Mannings of basketball (just not as highly rated coming out of higschool). They have a factory of talent going. Hope we can look back and say we get all 3 of them and their cousins to suit of for the Gators one day. That is assuming they can shoot the rock and develop like Erick did.

Murphy's parents were at the Connecticut game, along with their youngest son. The opportunity to get something rolling with Alex was certainly available that night. Maybe their attendance was more than just the Murphy's coming to watch the game.
