Spoilers here if you are watching the opening ceremonies...

One of the two people that lit the cauldron tonight was Irina Rodnina. She was a 3 time gold medalist in figure skating so from that perspective it makes sense. She is also a parliament member for Putin's party, so she has the political end covered. But last year she tweeted a picture of the Obama's with a banana superimposed. She never apologized and it was a big story in Russia. Can't imagine after the delegation we chose to send and the president not going that this wasn't purposeful by Putin.

While I have to say the ceremonies were a lot better done than some most recent versions (Beijing and London were both a little weird), Putin's influence was definitely all over these games and in a fairly creepy fashion too.

What she's supposed to pay homage to Obama ? One dictator arrayed against another. Big deal.

Incredible how the USA is all about free speech, but its citizens are the first to speak against other countries having the same rights like this Russia girl who posed Obama with a banana. So what!? It's funny. It's satire. So what if someone in another country creates a picture of Obama with a banana? Personally, I thought the photoshops of Bush as monkey were better, but not everyone would agree because he is white.

Maybe Russia is more like America than many would like to admit.

Except that in some ways it's probably freer.

Once again, free speech does not mean freedom from criticism. It does not mean that you have the right to be granted a major honor by the government. It means that the government can't enforce legal penalties against you for saying something unpopular. Nobody here advocated sending her to prison or even fining her. So her rights to free speech are not in any danger from Americans.

Nah. It's just amusing to see the board's jester return with the typical over-the-top statement. Carry on! I'm sure there will be a thread shortly on Nazi Germany and you'll bust in with a one-liner about how they were "freer in some respects" than the US.

Only a yokel would posit that the US is freer than Russia in every respect. Yet, you burst out laughing when I posited that Russia was freer than the US in *some* respects. Who was poised and ready ? Who's licking his wounds and spoiling to settle old scores ?

I was laughing because it's so obviously over-the-top.

The University of Florida is obviously the better academic institution over f$u. But in terms of providing circus education? It's no contest: the clowns are better! So they are better in some respects than us in that.

Now, if you want to clarify how they are freer--then, by all means, elaborate! But, on its face, your statement is pretty funny since by most metrics, the Russians don't score too well in the freedom category.

But, so long as we're bringing up the past--perhaps you might explain which real-life exercises the F-35 has done poorly in vis a vis other jets? I was genuinely curious (honestly) since I hadn't heard of them participating in such exercises yet and you never responded which one you were talking about. You can PM me if you'd like because I honestly was trying to read what you were referring to.

Well, you're freer there to poo beside your fellow man. Typically we literally erect a barrier that prevents that here.

We should send Uncle Joe. He'll get her back, whether he means to or not.
