    1. Kicker missing a field goal that would have been automatic last year

2 All Americana punter not punting like an All American (IMO)

    3. DB's still not tackling well in particular Roberson and Watkins. The one long screen play Ball was blocked in the back, but what was upsetting is Roberson was in position to hold it to a 5 yard gain but he missed the tackle and it went for 30 plus yards

    4. The back ups on the Dline. I wasn't impressed with Cox. Darius Cummings was suspended and Jacobs didn't play much because he is hurt

    5. Not impressed with Patton on Kickoffs hope we try Purifoy

    6. The penalties on both sides of the ball. They have got to stop

Of the ones listed, the punter issue worries me least. Christie is a proven commodity.

The only ones that would concern me at this stage are 1 and 5. There is no reason Christy won't snap out of it, the missed tackles on the corner (I was thinking more Poole) were still pretty rare, kickoff returns don't bother me as long as you hold onto the ball and don't get pinned inside the 20, and penalties--well, I can't remember a Gator team that hasn't dealt with them in my 25 years of watching Florida football, so as long as we are closer to the first half (3) than the second (7), I am fine.

But placekicking is a huge concern. I am hoping Hardin was simply nervous. His PATs were sharp, but the missed FG was rough, as were a couple of kickoffs.

On the defensive line, that was one of the chief things I was watching coming into the game. I didn't think Cox was bad and assume he will get better. But there is no way we can go 8-10 deep like we did last year. McCallister didn't play, Cummings was suspended, Jacobs hurt, and none of the freshmen are ready. That means we will see Powell at Buck far more than the staff wants and it will limit how much we can run the 34 stuff. Or it might also mean more of Easley at end, where he simply can't be a disruptive.

Muschamp singled out Cox as somebody that he was happy with. I'll take the coach's word . . .

Special teams will be huge this weekend. We cannot afford to throw away points or give away significant yardage in special teams on Saturday. Hoping we do not try to give Duke Johnson a chance to return anything.

My impression was it was not perfect and for the first game of the season I did not expect it to be. But on balance it was a fine effort. A team's greatest stride in improvement usually comes in its second game of the season as coaches focus on the issues observed.

I dont think Cox was bad I just wasn't impressed. I wanted to be impressed because like you said we didnt even see McCallister so it seems we might have a slight depth problem at DE and BUCK. We didnt really see a back up SAM either unless I missed something

How severe is Jacob's injury? Does anyone know? I missed hearing about it.

Best I remember, the penalty flags didn't start flying until the second half. I was very pleased to see our offense go long stretches without procedure, illegal motion and delay of game penalties. That's usually a staple of a first game. The most surprising penalties were all the off-sides penalties on the defense. I think the Toledo center was doing something to draw them off. I'd swear I saw him twitch before the snap a few times. Didn't mind the interference call on Roberson. I want to see him play more physical this year. That was usually the kind of call Watkins usually gets. He's never had a problem being physical. He just had a habit of getting there before the ball.

Of the other stuff, only the kicking worries me. I think the backup DL will come along. Kyle C. will be his regular self. Our DBs will not be missing many more tackles this season. Boom won't stand for that. We have plenty of return specialists if Patton doesn't improve. I like Purifoy and Showers.

    1. The kicker may just not be good. If so, this will result in lower points/possession, which is real issue.

2-6. Ah, I am not sure any of these are indicative of the future AND a real issue. E.g. we've always had penalties.

    Can I add a #7?

    7. The starters on the Dline. The Toledo line might just be pretty good, but the passing pockets for Toledo often looked very good. I was hoping this group would exert an almost-every-down type of presence. We'll see.

Field goals not being automatic, the penalties and our return game worry me too. I think with the type of offense we are running, giving up points, not starting with better than average field position and losing yards is going to hurt.

But, its only the first game. We haven't seen Purifoy yet, and I think champ will clean up some penalties. The kicker is definitely my biggest concern.

If we're nitpicking, then I guess I'll add that our kickoff coverage allowed some decent gains. Somewhat troublesome with the athletes other teams will trot out there to return kicks.

Poole and Hargreaves, I guess. We played more four down than I expected, but that makes sense in a nickel.

They played like I expected them to besides Powell being more involved than I initially thought.

As a Gator and a Dolphin fan, I am going to see both sides of what Caleb Sturgis brought to the table.

Hopefully the return of Purifoy, Morrison on D plus the inspirational
return by Matt Jones on offense will ignite a better overall performance.

Being a redshirt freshman, I hope that our kicking situation is pointing up due to a lack of real game experience. The penalties are just as bad as they have been in years past. Those two aspects should send the signal to Champ that settling for a FG instead of trying harder for the TD (read make bolder decisions) may be the only viable ticket in our SEC/FSU games.

Again, I hope it is more about the lack of experience but I saw a distinct dropoff in quality play on our D when the second team was taking snaps. That just means that we have to make more plays with the first team, especially in the 4th quarter. And if we are in the lead in the 4th, the other team will need to throw to try and catch up. I like our chances in that scenario.

FWIW, we averaged 1 yard more on kick returns on Saturday vs. last year (24 yards on Sat vs. 23 yards last year).

    3. There were a few plays where Roberson looked like he thought his job was done when he arrived at the ball. Some arm tackling and going for the big hit vs. wrapping up.

Rade's #7: I thought the Dline starters looked very good. Easley consistently blew up plays and shed blockers at the point of attack. Leon Orr was getting good push as well. Toledo's QB barely had time to get the ball off on most of their passing plays, and they're an offense that tries to get the ball out quickly. And all that when we were really only bringing pressure with the front four. I am definitely not worried about our starting Dline.

there was a period of time, if memory serves, when sturgis wasn't all that automatic. it's probably a case of nerves. just has to get the experience of kicking in the game and then in pressure situations. comes w/ the territory.
