First, I have no clue if this kid wants to come to UF, but he's from Florida and wants to get closer to home... (allegedly):

This kid was a freshman All-American at WVU and is transferring. Jujaun Seider was his primary recruiter out of Pompano Beach, FL. He was a 3-star and lightly recruited, w/ FIU, WVU, Arkansas, Bowling Green, Cincinnati offers.

His dad played at Oklahoma and in the NFL. His uncle is Jerome McDougle, who played at Miami and in the NFL. Good pedigree, for sure.

    Lamonte McDougle, 6'1 295lbs DT/NG

    (WVU's 2017 roster lists him at 5'10)

I don't know man. Is it possible to be an SEC DT at 5'11" if that's true? (I see him listed at 6'1" but I have no way of knowing which is true)

Also, the article says WVU runs a 3-4 and he didn't like playing nose in that scheme. Probably pretty similar system that we've switched too. But what do I know?

Well, Tim McCoy was 5'11 300+ and played many years in the NFL. But...it's a different era. He was a freshman all-American at a P5 school, so I'd assume he could easily play SEC ball. Honestly, a guy that short is tough for a 6'5 OL to block.

He's from south Florida and has Miami roots, so I could see him ending up there. Or he could end up at FIU, FAU, or a USF/UCF type school. Who knows? It caught my attention because one of the stories I skimmed through list UF as a possibility (but that could have just been the writer speculating).

Tony McCoy was only 6'1" and was a real fireplug at UF and 10 years in the NFL

Yes....and Tim Newton was 5'11 and play 8 or so NFL years. Short DT's have their place in football. I wouldn't want five 6' DT's on the roster, but having one or two isn't a problem at all. Like I said earlier, a 5'11/6' DT is tough for a 6'5, 6'6 OL to block and get leverage.

It'll be interesting to see where this kid goes. This is one of those type of kids who would have been a good Plan B during the recruiting cycle - but I doubt anyone thought he'd be a freshman all-American.

Yeah. He is leaving WVU because of the 3-4 which keeps him from making sacks. If we run a similar D, why would he be interested in us?

Because we're closer to home? Again, I have no clue where he wants to transfer. Article mentioned UF (among others)....that's why I posted the thread.

Honestly, most DT's aren't "sack" specialists. So I don't know why he's concerned about making sacks. He's a true NT w/ his size and he should embrace it, no matter where he ends up. Does he expect to play DE? Even in a 4-3 he won't be 'making sacks' any more so than in a 3-4 (imo).

    Exactly.

His job is to occupy two offensive lineman, and that's pretty much going to be his job no matter where he goes. Not many "flashy" dt's around, and the one or two that are flashy are a whole lot faster than this guy.

Embrace your role and you can make a healthy living in the nfl.

Well, we know one thing: he's not transferring to FSU! :D

West Virginia restricts Lamonte McDougle from transferring to Big 12 schools, FSU, Tennessee, others

The tweet also confirmed that McDougle will be restricted by the university from transferring to another Big 12 program. Additionally, McDougle will be barred from transferring to any school on WVU’s non-conference schedule the next four years, schools that include Tennessee, North Carolina State, Florida State, Missouri, Maryland and Virginia Tech, among others.

If I remember correctly, UF was interested in this kid as a recruit but had other kids higher on the board. I think the staff also knew his family ties to WVU were pretty strong, so it would be hard to overcome that after not going after him very hard.

FSU is probably not an option as the depth chart would not be very favorable for him to see playing time. If he was a LB, that would be a different story.

You wouldn't say FSU isn't an option for him because WVU restricted him from going there? It's the depth chart.

    Gotcha

    So he's a freshman All-American at a top 25 Power 5 school and he's going to drop down to a G5 school?

Quite possible if he doesn't want to do the job he's built for. If he just wants sacks he might have trouble finding a home. Who knows.

Right now, Coach Grantham is using DT's at the nose, one DT (Cutliffe), one should be DE (Ancrum), and larger DEs at DE, and 240 lb Jefferson, 270 lb Polite and 250 lb Clayton at Buck.

So, I guess at 6' 295 lbs he might play Strongside DE and get more sack opportunities in the new Gators 3/4-4/4 defensive line.

So much for that FSU depth chart. Marvin Wilson out with torn MCL. Only if we hadn't spoken too soon.
