    I don't think a "post-scarcity" society is necessarily a communist one.

Not "C" but I'm thinking Star Trek society (at least in the Federation) was certainly "c."

    Wow, I'm such a dork!

whoa whoa whoa man. i am all for paying my fair share of taxes to pay the courageous people of our armed forces/fire fighters/police services. also i do think that their are some people who do need our help, now if they took drug tests, were only allowed to stay on food stamps/ unemployment for 3 months, then maybe i would be less pissed off about this. its the culture that has been created by letting these bums stay on these benefits for month after month after month that is very scary they are getting money and have no clue where it is coming from, while i go to work and bust my ass. its just not right, plain and simple

I agree. Reforms are called for. I was speaking more generally on the subject of welfare in general and whether it's necessary or not. Let's put it this way, Louis the XVI was probably wishing (as he was led to the guillotine) he had a better welfare system in place.

Nixon and his HEW chief Finch were playing with the idea in his interrupted second term.

You could also call it a triumph of the Enlightment - the victory of reason & science over the ills of humanity - war, scarcity, etc. I suppose its left-ish in its view of the spirit of internationalism, common humanity and progress to overcome nationalism and conflict.

The real intent of entitlements from a spending perspective is just allowing a train to take another track for a certain stretch of time. Like wgb said, it is just a part of aggrigate demand and then will create a ripple effect for the rest of the economy.

All money today is born out of debt (public or private). It even says so on the bill.

It is my concern when democrats will point to those same people and say that greedy capitalists are the reason that they find themselves in that condition. Then democrats will try to redistribute more hand-outs and they'll waste that too. There should be limitations on how people get to spend their handouts.

There's already limitations but the government really only enforces the limitations when it's expedient. Same as with things like immigration, the war on drugs, campaign finance reform, etc.

Just another way that liberals use hard-working American taxpayers' money to buy votes from lazy dead beats who want to live off the govt.

Those who don't need it would just bank the savings.

That's probably central to their strategy to become "Those who don't need it".

He also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name. This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number. His number is 666.
