Just went to the 7/11. Guy and his gal in front of me bought $60 worth of boxed candy (for X-Mas presents, they said) with their SNAP card.

After they left I commented to the clerk. He said that's nothing. At the non franchise stores, (private convenience) they buy beer and cigarettes. Private stores charge them double the cost for the priveledge.

So, we the tax payers are paying for $12 pack of cigs and six packs of beer. Guy said it was rampant.

    I'm pissed!

I say SNAP should have WIC guidelines and only be available through stores that can't afford to be caught for fraud because of the potential millions in fines.

Why? The money goes back into the economy whether its spent on wholesome foods or candy. If someone makes bad choices, that's on them, not you. I don't know why people even pay attention to what people are paying for things with. Stop being so nosy, it will result in less anger.

Because the idea is to help someone in need to get food to their families, not purchase alcohol, beer, etc with it. It's government assistance, not a free-for-all. By allowing frivolous purchases, they take money from those who actually do need the funds for food purchases.

Did you notice the car they left in?

A while back I was in Publix. The woman in front of me paid for her basic food with WIC vouchers. She paid for a couple bottles of blush wine with a debit card. I then saw her in the parking lot getting a new Escalade with fancy rims.

You're smarter than this. Otherwise let's just drop cash from the skies like in the original Batman movie. It will all be spent and stimulate the economy. No reason to get a job.

But that's not the idea. Its to subsidize the cost of food, period. People have to help themselves. If they qualified for benefits, then they aren't "taking" money from anyone else who qualifies. What would take benefits from people who need them is making arbitrary cuts based off these well-worn stories of "rampant" graft.

Actually, I'm in favor of a guaranteed income. Everyone should get ~14-20k/yr, simply for being a breathing adult. Then there would be less of a need for a means-tested safety net, or things like SNAP.

If things like this get you sooooo pissed that you have to run back and post on too hot, me thinks you should have at least did yourself a favor and bought a few blunts, packed them up nicely, and then smoked them first.

If "just getting money into the economy" were the goal, then everyone should get SNAP and it should be called a stimulus.

That's not the "goal," nor was I speaking of it as stimulus. Just as far as some sort of slight to taxpayers, there is really no difference if Publix or 7/11 get $12 in gov't money for wholesome food or cigarettes. Maybe it offends sensibilities, but that's beyond anyone's control other than the person with an EBT card and the person taking it.

While I think SNAP should be handled like WIC - ie, limited to select things, I also agree with the "mind your own business" premise as it relates to these things.

How about they made bad choices with THEIR money?

We should go back to the commodities program, people waiting for the delivery.
