So the wife and I went to Applebees today and I order a burger with my usual medium rare and the waitress says you can order it "pink or not pink". I asked her if she was serious and she said yes so I ordered it pink and made a mental note to never buy a burger at Applebees again.... Anyone ever hear such a thing?

No, but in North Carolina ordering it rare is illegal.

I never go to applebees, but it's a good idea to ALWAYS answer "yes" to "pink or no pink".

most chains won't let you order medium rare because they are afraid of lawsuits. so they don't even bother teaching the cooks how to cook meat to temp. so most of the servers esp the ones new to the game don't know the terms rare to well. they are basically taught the descriptions pink and no pink. i'm sober now but still go to "taverns" for burgers. bar burgers are always the best.

We have a nice burger bar spot called Fosters in Cape Coral. One of the best burgers around this area.

Probably because most chains have poor quality meat for their burgers and you have no idea what it's come in contact with, or even blended with. I love medium rare steaks, but my ground beef I only go medium. You just don't know unless you're grinding your own meat at home.

*****insert joke here for those with the gutter brain syndrome, including me

i grind my own. buy chuck cheap then throw in a ribeye for good fat content. best to grind it after leaving in the freezer for about 30 minutes. thank God for my industrial strength kitchen aide. the house one's have plastic gears and don't hold up very well with the grinding or sausage attachments

i really don't get the love affair with el cap. i didn't dig it at all. this is from ringside couple blocks north from there. there's also a new joint called engine no. 9. the crowd can be a little pretentious but the burgers are killer. and the siracha wings

sorry a few blocks south of el cap

A few chains like this. When I was in undergrad Applebees was in walking distance from my apartment and I refused to go because 1) their food sucks and 2) their shoe leather burgers because they wouldn't let me get it cooked medium rare.

When I go out to eat a burger, I consistently use the phrase 'no-pink, not burned' when ordering. Steak is a different matter.
