Kentucky & Miss State lead the SEC w/ 16 returning starters.

UF w/ 14 (is this accurate?).

Other SEC teams: UGA, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Arkansas 15; Auburn, USC 14; Alabama, LSU 12; Tenn, Vandy 10; Mizzou 9

FSU & Miami both have 13 returning starters.

Good thing we don't play Georgia Southern (who begins their first season in 1A next year), they have 16 coming back!

I will say it again, look out for Miss. State next season. Dan Mullen might have his best chance to break into the Top 3 in the West next season.

14 is low, but it really kind of depends on the personnel packages. I'm guessing he's using an 11 package (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR), counting Patton, Dunbar, and Trey Burton as the starting WRs last year, but that would be the only package that returns fewer than 8 starters on offense. It also really depends on what his criteria for a "starter" is. With all of the injuries we had last season, basically half the team started at some point.

Lighten up Francis! Sorry you're still butt hurt about the loss to a 1AA team. Figured we could all get a laugh out of it now....

Number of returning starters is largely irrelevant. The more meaningful statistic would be percent of snaps played returning. For instance, at QB, our starter is returning, but he only played 1/3 of the snaps in the season, but we have a starter returning?

Yes, esp given the dynamics of the QB situation last year.

Not sure how he is calculating. I count 18 returning starters. Perhaps he isn't including Driskel and Green?

On defense, we ran a significant amount of nickle, so Hargreaves got some starts even though he was the #3 corner.

Also, Cummings and Orr got plenty of starts because of the injuries to Easly and Jacobs.

We had so many different people start at one time or another last year because of injuries. I guess it is pretty subjective to determine our returning starters unless he is just looking at the game 1 depth chart. Not sure, but this is what I am tracking.

Offense (9): Driskel, Taylor, Dunbar, Joyer, Moore, Green, Garcia, Humphries, Clay Burton
Defense (9): Fowler Jr., Bullard, Cummings*, Orr*, Ball, Taylor, Morrison, Hargreaves, Riggs

    starters lost-

Offense: Patton, Trey Burton, Jonathan Harrison
    Defense: Powell, Roberson, Purifoy

I like looking at number of two deep returning, but I think percentage of snaps returning is the best way, if someone can take the time to calculate it. Good call.

Yeah, this is where counting returning "starters" gets tricky. For example, the only way we could have the 9 players you listed as returning on Defense as "starters" would be if we were running a 4-4 (with Powell as the 4th LB).

I would only count 3 returning OL "starters" since we lost Harrison and Halapio whom I would consider to both be starters. And Joyer should only be considered a "starter" if we ran more plays from a two-back package than a three-receiver package. It would be reasonable to make the argument that we only have 12 "starters" returning using the below.

    Returning
Offense (7): Driskel, Taylor, Dunbar, Humphries, Garcia, Moore, C. Burton
Defense (5): Bullard, Fowler, Morrison, Hargreaves, Riggs

    Lost
Offense: Harrison, Halapio, Patton, T. Burton
Defense: Easley, Jacobs, Powell, Roberson, Purifoy, Watkins

That logic would have a "starting" offense with an 11 personnel package that looks like this:
    QB - Driskel
    RB - Taylor
WR - Patton, Dunbar, T. Burton
    TE - C. Burton
OL - Humphries, Garcia, Harrison, Halapio, Moore

And a Nickel defense that looks like this:
DL - Fowler, Easley, Jacobs, Bullard
    LB - Powell, Morrison
DB - Hargreaves, Roberson, Purifoy, Riggs, Watkins

The truth is that because of all the injuries last year, the 2014 line up has a wealth of players with "starting" experience, which should be considered an asset for next season.

Hey, I said his best chance, I didn't say it would happen. lol

They have some tools there, plus LSU, Texas A&M, and Alabama will be breaking in new QBs. They weren't too far off from beating TAMU, Auburn, and Alabama. They just imploded against LSU after outplaying them for almost 3 quarters. Just a little bit more of talented depth, and they might be able to challenge for that Top 3 spot.

That's 18 returning starters.... I like that. We also have some great red-shirt fr. players and incoming freshman that could help right away. Tabor is one of them...

    This.

The two-deep, the two-deep, the two-deep. For all of the pain we felt, and the ridiculous string of injuries, we built tremendous depth last year. Ever the optimist, I am hyped for the coming season already.

I hope we have less starters this year; it means less injuries, more consistency , continuity, and we're winning games with the starters that are on the field...not having to change the line up to find a better combination.

Alabama will do what they did with John Parker Wilson...rely way more on the stable of backs...this is what garnered so much attention for mark Ingram to begin with.

After last year, you'd think UF has like 35 returning starters. Didn't somebody else have to start for all the guys we lost to injury?

Myakka, not sure I totally agree. Saban seems to want to change the offense a bit and Lane likes to pass the ball. It'll be interesting to see if the FSU kid transfers in and wins the job. He'll only have fall camp to prepare, which is good for us w a September match up.
