Here is a great article from a generally pro-Alabama site.

    http://www.rollbamaroll.com/2014/1/27/5349996/2014-roster-lookahead-the-number-crunch

Basically, they are oversigning every cycle but this year, are oversigning by 8+. This means that they have to force out some players, likely players that did not pan out. UF has a policy that says we can't go past 85 on signing day and therefore we have players who didn't pan out and will never play on the roster. It's very difficult to compete with a program that forces out 8+ noncontributors a year and replaces them with fresh talent as it makes missing on talent very little of a deal.

I personally think that UF does the right thing by not allowing us to go over 85, athletes commit to us and we should commit to them and not force them out if they don't develop as planned. I think the NCAA should step in and prevent signing over 85 at SIGNING DAY, the current rule does not allow 85 by the start of fall camp which is just idiotic as it allows schools to force students out due to a loophole.

Hopefully, someone will eventually step in and make the school's honor a four-year scholarship for its entirety. If they want to take it away at year five, that's fair.

Unless I'm mistaken scholarships are year to year and can be pulled whenever a school wants.

How many is Tennessee over-signing? I gather they have 33 commits already.

I have been wrong in the past, but I thought I remembered Coach Muschamp saying that all player scholarships beginning with the 2012 class, were all 4 year scholarships. Now, this does not preclude a player meeting with his coach and deciding to transfer if they were not going to be getting the playing time that they wanted.

As we all know, all universities used to honor four year scholarships. Back in my days at Florida, that's what you had.
Unfortunately, there were several players on the team that would not work to get better... would not push themselves, not work out as hard... would not do their off-season running. They would lay around the French Quarter Apartments during the summer and drink beer and get fat and out of shape.

This was especially true if you had gotten an injury.
I broke my ankle my first summer at Florida and I knew that I would not be playing that fall.
So, yes... I was one of those lazy bums over at those Saturday afternoon keg parties at the French Quarter Apartments listening to "Oye Como Va" and "Black Magic Woman" by Santana. Ah... the memories!
(Does anyone remember "The French Quarter Apts and The Villiage Park Apts" that made up what was called, "Cin City"? back in the late 70's???)

We all knew that the University of Florida would honor our scholarship come September... and then the same thing next September. There was no incentive to get better. You had your tutition, books, room and meals at Yon Hall all paid for.
If you did just enough of the right things to avoid being kicked off the team... then you were able to stay on the team and take advantage of all of the freebies.
That is why the universities changed the ruling from 4-year schollys to year to year.
That ruling motivated you to keep your head out of your butt and at least, show the coaches that you were trying your best to be competitive as possible.

Bama is over signing by 10 guys. Dayum.

Who says these kids aren't employees? Saban's practicing the old Welch rank and yank. At an even higher percentage than Welch preached.

    Absolutely makes sense.

But I think that also argues in favor of athletes being viewed as "employees" earning their pay. The argument the union proponents are trying to make.

Yeah. I'm not sure the four year thing is the best way to go if everyone else is cheating the system.

Many schools show athletes the door well before signing to open spaces.

With what was on their roster -- by about 8 or so I think is the number.

They have already ran off 4 or 5 of them.

There is a great Outside the Lines video on this subject on youtube. Primarily deals with Les Miles and LSU.

I use it when teaching my Intro to Sport Management class.

With regard to over signing UF is not permitted to play on the same field like the rest of the SEC and FSU. I would be willing to bet the BCS top 10 teams from this year do not have this restriction like UF does.

Who is not permitting UF to play the oversigning game then?

This. The high road isn't paved with wins in this case.

How's Kyle doing? I hope he regains his old form and gets his job back. He was a monster year before last.
