There are few people who are close to the notoriously insular Barack Obama (a former aide, Neera Tanden, said that "Obama doesn't call anyone, and he's not close to almost anyone. It's stunning that he's in politics, because he really doesn't like people") but Valerie Jarrett is among the select few. They have been friends for decades; she introduced Barack to Michelle; she is a constant presence in the White House, and highly unusual for a White House aide, enjoys her own Secret Service protective detail. And when she described Barack Obama as having been "bored to death his whole life" she helped explained what lies behind a failed presidency.

He parlayed the state senate job into becoming a United States Senator. How long did it take for that role to bore him? Not long at all, according to Game Change authors John Heilemann and Mark Halperin who wrote of his attitude towards being a Senator just one year:

The glacial pace, the endless procedural wrangling, the witless posturing and petifoggery, the geriatric cast of characters doddering around the place: all of it drove him nuts. To one friend in Chicago, Obama complained,

"It is basically the same as Springfield except the average age in Springfield is forty-two and in Washington it's sixty-two. Other than that, it's the same bullshit".

After listening to Biden during a committee hearing, Obama passed a note to Gibbs that read "Shoot me now".

Time and again after debates on the floor, he would emerge through the chamber's double doors shaking his head, rolling his eyes, using both hands to give the universal symbol for the flapping of gums, sighing wearily, "Yak, yak, yak".

There is a surfeit of examples of Obama's refusal to take his job with any degree of seriousness.

He has repeatedly refused to meet with economic experts, skipped more than half of his daily intelligence briefings, turned his Cabinet (trumpeted by an obedient media in 2009 as a Lincolnesque "Team of Rivals") into a Team of Idolizers that he almost completely ignores -- both as individuals and as a group; and , if one believes his protestations (a big "if") was out of the loop or, as Charles Krauthammer wrote, oblivious to the NSA, IRS, and AP scandals (as well as Benghazi, Fast and Furious, the vendetta against James Rosen at Fox News -- the list is endless). Of course, the most recent revelation is most revealing: even as he staked his reputation and legacy on his signature "achievement" (he called it his most important initiative) ObamaCare, he reportedly met only once with the official he chose to head the program, Kathleen Sebelius. Talk about being outside the beltway! Actually, that is where he can often be found: on the golf courses, on vacations, in front of adoring crowds, or shaking the money tree at glitzy fundraisers in Hollywood -- a natural environment for a faux president. A President has to set priorities after all.

When Americans were dying in Benghazi, he took the night off to rest for a trip to Las Vegas for a fundraiser to help his re-election efforts; when Americans were engaged in the mission to kill Bin Laden, he went to play cards with his body man. Those events were boring because they were not about him.

The most telling quote of all:

"There was a pattern becoming visible: throughout his career, Barack Obama has found work too mundane, too boring to bother spending time on."

A true liberal. Let others work and pay for my stuff, as work is simply too boring for me.

A loafer can never have a true sense of what it's like to produce. He has no value for what one works for, and therefore no reservations in taking it away.

Gotta give it to the man though, he's smart. He coasted through life on the backs of others and became POTUS.

He's not a leader. How many times have we said this. He is a completely empty suit. He's never had a job. He's never run a business or anything. He's a "community organizer". He is nothing. But he can read the heck out of a teleprompter.

After obama ... the experience required to be President is zero.

Amazing how the millions of people who voted for him never once asked "what have you done in the past?" when he was promising "pie." All he did was open his mouth, and they believed him.

He was never remotely qualified to be President but the low information crowd out numbers the rest of us.

Obama has certainly lowered the bar for the qualifications to become President.

Ah, the good old second term malaise/boredom/cut off from the world piece. A staple of (bad & cliche) political writing.

Dave - you have to remember that he was hardly vetted because if you asked any pointed questions you must surely be a racist.

How about it? For someone who apparently doesnt open up to people and is "notoriously insular," people who've never met him or barely know him seem to know him really, really well. Armchair pyschology is fun and all, but I feel like I've read this piece many, many times before about different people and different presidents. Seems like every second term president is "bored" - tired of DC, tired of the partisanship, all the BS associate with the job, blah blah. So very cliche.

He's black, he speaks well, and he tells them what they want to hear. What he's done in the past doesn't matter.

Tip of the iceberg. Wait until the "tell all" books are written. Jimmy Carter will look like frickin George Washington and Thomas Jefferson compared to Barak Hussein Obama. Apparently the way to the white house is to be liberal, hip, slick and black and you do not get vetted by the media. Look for Corey Booker to run and capitalize on this.

I've been saying this since before this clown was elected--he's not an 'idealogue', he's a lazy ass.

Echoing and regurgitating neo-libby talking points, was just easy--and easily caused him to be mistaken for a true believer of liberal ideology, and to be mistaken as one actually committed to a cause.

Not at all. Just a lazy ass bully, who shuns work, but doesn't shy away from abusing his authority, or political correctness, or victimization, or whatever tool may be expedient/convenient to intimidate anyone who might jeopardize the facade that maintains his comfort level.

he is too lazy to work and considers it to be beneath him. the worst part is that his choices to delegate to have been as incompetent as he is.

he is a narcisstic lazy mouthpiece that has never had to produce anything other than a vote.

history will judge him and his legacy will be that of a slacker who continued to fall up due to the liberal power base that pushed him to the top. reminds me of Lane Kiffin

what is shocking to me is how the press has never dug deeper into VJ and her ability to control 0. I still say he is a Manchurain candidate that the Chicago machine has shaped and groomed from an early age, right down to making sure he was married to the right person and VJ is his handler.

Why run for a second term then? Is it the thrill of being the most powerul man on Earth? Well if you like the perks of the job, you gotta deal with the crap too. Or is he also too perfect to deal with the "nuisances" of the position? Lets give him yet another free pass on the basis of being Black and having both mommy and daddy issues. Afterall, the office of POTUS was created in the 1700s by white men for white men, therefore it's racist and so are the "nuisances" of the position like actually working and running a country.

What's truly pathetic about this, is how so many ppl. confused his 'aloofness', for a sign of intelligence.

    Shear buffoonery.

    It's called avoidance.

His aloofness, his cavalier treatment of serious issues, his inability to formulate coherent sentences off teleprompter, his use of his 'charm' and sense of humor in lieu of serious engagement with serious issues, his defensive attacks against his critics, his refusal to engage with adversaries, all betray a fear of engagement on the issues--which is completely inconsistent with an ideologue.

He is, was, and always will be, mentally lazy--and extremely protective of the facade behind which he has insulated himself for decades.

Note how passively engaged he was in the creation of the landmark legislation that bares his name--Obamacare--he basically pirated the damn thing form Romney/Mass--and scarcely bothered to seek to conform it to a national basis--hence its colossal face plant, out the gate.

Note how un-transparent his entire presidency has been--sign of intelligence? Genius? Ideology??? An ideologue is in your face constantly, talking about every facet of their ideology; openly; publicly; boastfully....

Why? Because an ideologue first, knows his ideology inside and out, and secondly, because they believe in what they champion, with every fiber of their being. Right or wrong, an ideologue believes wholeheartedly in that which he champions--see Marx, Castro, Hitler, Reagan, Limbaugh, Hannity, Rubio, and Cruz, as just a small sampling of true ideologues.

I could go on...suffice it to say, I'm only surprised at how long it's taken for Barry to be exposed as the epic lazy-ass that he has so obviously and transparently, always been.
