I am reminded of the perennial end of the season optimism that prevailed when I was an undergrad long ago. "Next year will be the year of the Gator!" ;)

I don't care where 'they' pick us to end up; I only care where 'we' actually end up--and how we get there.

e.g.--If 'we' go undefeated, but our QB is accused of rape, and 'we' need to cover the rape up, and avoid any kind of real investigation into the alleged rape, in order to keep our QB's h-man campaign alive and well...I'd be more disgusted than I was this year.

e.g. 2--If we win 9 (perhaps even 8) games--even if we don't even win the east'n div'n-- but show some real progress in problem areas, the players play with intensity, and the team shows character on and off the field...I'd be plenty proud.

With a schedule probably tougher than this year's? Yeah, it could be worse, but with all the injured players back, we should at least win 7 games.

I myself expect more of the same from Muschamp unless he just blows us away with something completely different. I just don't see him his changing what he does on offense, no matter if it's a new OC or not, and he's obviously made no moves to change the disastrous coaching of our special teams either. On D, I might give him a pass on Durkin because it's mostly Muschamp's D anyway, but Durkin was pretty average as a DC to say the least.

I just don't think the guy has a clue as to what he's doing and really has no idea how to manage a program like UF's, and then he threw Pease under the bus to basically make the overture of "Hey Gator Nation, I'm going to fix all of this by getting a new OC and OL coach".

Maybe he'll surprise us. I honestly believe the guy wants to keep his job here, so maybe that's the motivator for him. Regardless, I'll believe it when I see it, and when we lose @ UT and are knocked out of the SEC East race early, and then lose @ Bama, I suspect Muschamp will soon be headed out the door. If he wants to prove me wrong on that, then do it. It'll be my pleasure to eat the crow.

But "a leopard cannot change it's spots" and that's a adage that is proven and true about 9 out of 10 times when it's applied to a situation like this, so I expect about 7 wins next season, a minor bowl, and Muschamp's firing before the 2014 season is over.

All of it is beyond my control. That being said I want the Gators to win every game they play. If they cannot win, at least put up a good fight and play smart, disciplined football. How 2014 turns out: who the hell knows? The bama game will be an interesting barometer as it is early (after the pre season cupcakes). I sincerely hope that we are sitting at our keyboards this time next year going "wow, how about them Gators!" after they kick some ass and take some names. We shall see....

At this point I'm neither optimistic or pessimistic...just too much uncertainty.

Positives: Have a lot of returners, many with valuable experience. New offensive coordinator and coach (presumably a positive anyway).

Negatives: Will returners be able to take it to the next level? Will WM let the offensive coordinator run a wide-open offense?

Wildcard: Driskell. Some on the board think he's going to make a big difference. Perhaps if the offense is changed, this will happen. But I still think back to the beginning of this year. He has the physical tools, but was not sold on the mental aspects of his game (including his decision-making). Will that ever change? We'll see. What'd I'd prefer is to have Greir come in and tear it up and start as a freshman, although I'm not sure WM is likely to to permit him to have a "real" chance, unless it's clear Driskell hasn't recovered.

I've got much better things to do with my mind then engage in the exercise of futility with respect to any "optimism" for next year while Muschamp continues to experiment with the program.

He figured you were a troll because your posts look like troll posts.

Everybody is frustrated with how this season went. And clearly some changes are being made to address the issues on offense. Our recruiting appears geared to be strong again this year, setting us up to have a very strong roster for the next few years.

But ranting like a two year old does nobody in Gator nation any good. It's bad for the team, their families, the staff, and recruiting.

If your goal is to hurt the team and set our roster back so that the next coach has a tougher job, you're right on track.

The early schedule will give us a very good clue. I didn't like what I saw in the Toledo game, and it really pissed me off that Herstreit called out UF as the team in the pre season top 10 that would finished unranked. I hate that MOST.

If he only wins 8 games next year, he should be fired. No less than 10 and an SEC East Title IMO. That's it. If Foley wanted to keep him, then he should produce big-time in 2014.

Gators commenting on next year using this past season as a comparison to 2014 are not doom and gloomers, they're just being realistic.

He might have, but I don't see any reason to necessarily expect that, unless it's via the injury route again. We're only losing two OL this year - Harrison and Halapio. We get back everyone else, plus the four frosh who red shirted, plus a new class coming in. Dillard is expected to take Harrison's position at center, Green should be back as an OT, and Jackson is expected to be in the mix - they almost burned his RS last season. That's three players he likely wouldn't beat out and needed to beat out at least two of them to get in the two deep, assuming everyone else comes back from their injuries. FWIW, I don't expect Thurman in the two deep either, although he should be there based on time in development.

I'd say the #1 primary negative next season is a team that, almost as a whole, quit on Muschamp in several games. I've played the game and I know when players quit like that, they have no faith in what their HBC is doing anymore. I just don't understanmd why anyone thinks this team will respond positively to Muschamp next season when he's basically lost their respect and trust. All that doesn't just disappear over one off-season, and I expect to see it manifesting itself in a our spring practices as well.
