In the other pix I noticed the Texas teams (West Texas State and St Mary's I think) appear to literally be practicing in cow pastures.

I think #83 is Jack Coons, one of our tight ends at that time. #66 may be Gary Clyatt but not sure.

looking back....i'd give back the 2 nc's under Meyer if SOS was still here....I think he would've gotten 1 or 2 more anyways

one of the biggest tragedies in college sports he didn't finish his career here...

I wish that pic was in color, I'd make it my desktop wallpaper.

Were the uniforms blue with an orange stripe around the sleeve?

Hey tilly, look who's out in one of those Texas cow pastures you're talking about - it's Mercury Morris!

LOL, I love this card. Strike a pose, Mercury!

That's on the old practice field at St. Thomas, which was only marginally better than a cow pasture compared to the practice facility now.

Correct about the color. The pants had a blue stripe with a little orange stripe down the middle. Helmet had a simple F. Very similar to the throwbacks worn against Alabama few years ago.

I was a late elementary grade student living in Ocala during Spurrier's playing days. My dad took me to several games, including the famous day against Auburn when Spurrier passed, punted and kicked Florida to victory, securing the Heisman over runner-up Bob Griese of Purdue.

    A few more images:

In Spurrier's acceptance speech for the Heisman, he graciously announced that he would be giving the statue to the school. Later, a replica was made for Spurrier. Since that time, the Heisman committee gives two statures, one for the winner and one for the school.

Here's the same uniform as the earlier image showing the helmet with the simple "F".

    This must be High School:

So Spurrier had TWO SI covers in the pros...pretty good considering how his career went.

If a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, two legal national title trophies in hand is worth...um, just don't touch my trophies. :)
