    MUST have Microsoft Word.

Which of the choices out there would you buy?

Office Depot has an HP Pavillion with Microsoft 8 and 6 Megs of Ram. Originally $479.

    Hmmm

This seems a continuation of your topic from a few weeks ago. As before, it is very doubtful that Microsoft Word will be included in the system. You can buy that on-line from places like NewEgg for $70 or so.

Truly, thanks to both of you.

the HP Pavillion I listed had 6 megs of Ram. The one you listed had only 4.

I mainly do writing, etc. NO internet gaming. Just turned 63 so...internet porn is at a minimum.

My old Dell is strapped with 1.25 megs of ram. I worry that in 5, 6 years 4 megs will be poorly slow.

Do I need to ask questions like how many slots are still available? That way I can add RAM later.

Kendrell, have you still not checked out OpenOffice or LibreOffice? There's no reason to buy MS Office in 2013.

Orange, thanks for that thought but consider:

I am a writer and have manuscripts up to 200 pages. If I send one in that program you mentioned the agent or book company likely won't have it...then I am SOL.

Word is the predominant word processing program out there.

    I think you're confused.

When you save your file in OpenOffice or LibreOffice, you can save it in MS Word format. Or PDF. It's functionally no different than Word, but costs nothing.

There's no harm in trying it. It's free. And it's as good (or better) than Word.

Agree with orangeblue. I use Google Drive solely for my documents and just save it is MS Word if need be.

One company offered to add in Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 for free. Valued at one on line company for $119 or so.

    Your thoughts?

if you insist on paying for Microsoft Office rather than use a compatible product for free then go for it. or you can try and purchase at a lower price on ebay. Note that Microsoft Office contains more than just Word. YOu also get powerpoint, excel, one note.

I don't think you could go wrong if they are throwing it in for free as long as by doing so you are not settling for a computer which you will be disappointed in. In other words is it really "free?"

I bought a HP absolutely love it. Got the 8600 printer too which is unreal. The only problem is the proprietary crap HP has on their system. I did NOT get windows 8. I got it and specified windows 7. They wanted to push that 8 crap on my I actually had to talk with a manager to NOT get it. I bought it from HP direct and asked for a better deal and got it!
