How ludicrous would it be to commemorate such a brief, powerful, and original speech with a long-winded steaming pile that was read from a teleprompter? Invariably, it would end with an empty reference to the bizarre concept of government of, by, and for the people.

Maybe if there was a great golf course right next to the Battlefield the Prez could grace the anniversary celebration.

Obama is smart enough to know that he couldn't compete with the Gettysburg Address, and would embarrass himself if he tried. I am surprised that he didn't try, because Obama thinks that he is one of the top four presidents of all time (including Lincoln, FDR, and LBJ). Luckily, he keeps his ego in check . . .

    The very first two posts.

    • He's wrong for skipping it.
    • He's wrong for attending it and giving a speech.

Obama is wrong no matter what he does.

since prezBO does not agree this is a great Nation and wants to fundamentally change it to socialism why would anyone expect the sum..... to attend or honor this great moment in our history

If you have seen my posts over the term of Obama's presidency and believe I am part of the ODS crowd then I am not sure a rational discussion is possible.

I simply believe that whomever the president, this is something they should be attending. And in Obama's case, he often cites Lincoln as someone he looked up to, it's a blue state who had much of the delegation ask him to come, it's a milestone anniversary of a singular US event, there are no conflicting priorities next week that I am aware of, and Gettysburg is even closer than Camp David (I live in the NW DC suburbs and can make it to Gettysburg in under an hour and a half by car, he wouldn't even have to give up a full day).
I truly don't get why he wouldn't go.

From browsing through the linked article it seems there is no prior standard for doing so. It says JFK was invited but didn't attend.

Edited: I reread it and I see your point about certain important dates.

The 150th anniversary is pretty important. Certainly more than the 142nd, 127th, 103rd, etc.

The best thing to happen would be for him to show up and read Lincoln's speech and nothing more. There would be no better way to commemorate the event then a black president descended from slaves reading it. Boggles the mind if he doesn't show.
