Obama proposes tieing Financial Aid to college ratings

    Absolutely agree with this. We've artificially inflated the process and costs by essentially forcing a lot of folks in that have no business there, and/or would be much better suited for other arrangements such as you've noted.

    While I generally tend to agree with the sentiment, the truth is the government has been intimately involved in this issue since Congress passed the HEA over 40 years ago. The HEA authorized the federal student loan programs, and you can make a well reasoned argument that those programs, perhaps as much as anything else, have contributed to the education affordability and debt crisis we currently have.

    This proposal seems to reign in the federal student aid programs by focusing federally insured student loans and federal grants more towards schools that meet performance-based criteria. That's why I think it's a step in the right direction...helping correct some of the unintended consequences.
