The CNET story was based on what it said that Rep. Jerry Nadler said in a conversation with FBI director Robert Mueller . There were immediate questions about whether that was what Nadler actually said.
He's come out and said that it wasn't. And CNET has pulled the story.

Exactly what law was passed that allows listening in to conversations without a court order?

This all sucks to many of us, but the majority of the public welcomes the gov't spying. Nothing will change.

The provision in question is from the patriot act and did not allow them to target specific Americans, which is why they interpreted it to mean that if they collected metadata on everyone and not info on specific individuals they were within the law. That was what I was referring to.

Funny enough, Jim Sensenbrenner, the guy who wrote the bill is aghast at this interpretation. As if when you give the government a whole slew of new powers they will not do anything shady with them? Not to mention that he was offered classified briefings on what was being done and didn't attend.

So true. The gov. can simply monitor facebook and find out all they want to know and not know about 90% of Americans.
