Was a little surprised wm didn't look for a FG kicker. With less than a good HS kicking game last year I thought we'd bring in a threat to get 3's.

It's pretty bad when our offense is looking to throw up a 3.

Well that 3 can make you or break you. A lot of games are won by field goals.

Hardin was the #1 kicker out of HS and we also just got the transfer from VT. The VT transfer is just the same as recruting one.

Agreed although I'm sure that's not plan A.

Of course.. However sometime I think as coaches they are ok to settle for 3. Field goal accuracy certainly became an issue last year as well. It was like a bad bad situation.

That was last year ... Looking ahead. can't possibly go through that again. Can we?

As G*torsRUL stated in this post, we got a kicker who transferred in from Va. Tech. He's pretty good.

No question we need to see better performance from our kickers.

Not sure why some on her are minimizing 3 points. Remember how important Sturgis was? And how problematic it was that we couldn't make field goals last year? I agree with the thread - doesn't seem like Special Teams is a big priority and it will hurt us again this year - you watch.

To be honest, I've never ever ever and I do mean ever have I seen 2 fg kickers on the same team be so friggen bad. No chip shot was a gimmee. Hopefully, that gets fixed.

Kicking is so crucial. It must be improved. We lost at South Carolina because of Hardin. I know its a team effort, but USC was a top 10 team. Our pathetic offense managed to move the ball somehow. Taylor balled out. Defense played awesome. Every point counts in games like that. When Hardin missed that 30 something yard FG it changed the whole rest of the game for us. So frustrating.

Kicking and punting are as much mental as physical...
IMO, our previous Special Teams Coach did a good job with the coverage and return aspects of kicking and punting, but did nothing that helped the "specialists." Coach Hutzler (IMO) not only knows both aspects of Special Teams, I can assure you that he has already taken steps to help the specialists get back to being the assets to the team that they were in 2012.
As for our new transfer kicker, I have not met him, and can only look at the stats he has from his one year at VaTech. While there, he was only a kick off guy (did not kick field goals at all) and averaged 61.5/ 46.1 net (slightly better than Austin's average (60.8), but Austin had more TB which would make his net better). The FG kicker they had, had a long of 42 on they year. He played in only 7 games in 2012, his only year with the team. He has not see the field, to attempt a field goal since 2011 (High School). Where Austin was ranked #1 in his class, Brooks was #24 and was a walk-on @ VaTech. This is not to say that the kid can't kick, it just says that VaTech didn't see enough good in his performance on the field to keep him around, let alone offer him a scholarship. Who knows, he may come out with a huge chip on his shoulder to prove VaTech made a mistake... it could happen. I just have more faith in Austin turning things around and having the kind of year we all wanted him to have last year.

We got that kicker from Virginia Tech(I believe) who transferred to us. Brooks abbott. Was an army all american from right there in jacksonville. Just spent a year a FSCJ. is a preferred walk on but will earn a scholly if he wins the starting job.
