I didn't think it was a big deal, it just seems odd that he hopes God will protect him(and even by simply thanking him it's implicit) no matter how crazy the decisions he makes appear to be. At some point it's not about God but his life decisions, just as it was for his great grandfather and a number of other family members sadly. Having all of the tragedy in the family isn't God's fault either, it's gravity and the need to challenge it. Challenge death enough times and you will lose. An amazing feat regardless.
